Default Video Card Choice

So on the 9th I'm going to get my little brother a computer and upgrade my own. My initial plan was to get a 8800GT for him and a GTX 260 for me. Now I'm starting to take a look at prices and I could get two GTS 250's for the price of the 8800GT and the GTX 260. Another option is to get the GTX 260 and a 9600GSO. Which pair would lead to the most efficient folding?

Most efficient folding?
9600GSO, 3 of them probably. So a GTX 260 and a 9600GSO would be great for folding.

I guess I could get three 9600GSO's for less than the price of a GTX 260 and a 9600GSO. Would that fold better? I could put two 9600GSO's in my computer, right? Even with the board being Crossfire.

Yeah, if it's Crossfire you won't be able to SLI the cards, but you can use 2 of them in the same rig to fold no problem

Great! Now is it more PPD to have 3x 9600GSO's or 1x 9600GSO and 1x GTX 260? Would there be much of an increase in power consumption?

9600GSOs get around 3.5-4k PPD. GTX 260 c216 can get around 8k PPD according to this chart:
http://www.overclock.net/overclock-n...iscussion.html

So it looks like a GTX 260 would be better (plus it's great for gaming ) but I'm not too sure about power consumption, so I'll let someone else asnwer that

Seems like I'll go with the 8800GT and GTX 260, best PPD for the money. Shouldn't be too expensive to keep these two setups running 24/7. Thank you for all the information!

Yea, already do, even though it's only 770PPD.

I'm averaging over 8.5K PPD with my 2 9600GSO's running at a 1782 shader.

From the numbers I get and what I've seen the 260's get it might be about even between 3 9600GSO's and a 260 + 9600.

Also, the power consumption on the 9600's is pretty low, around 78W while folding 24/7.
