Default Now use 4 cores in VMware player

Normally when we use VMware, we end up running two instances if we have a quad or upto four instances with an i7. With VMware player 3.0 beta, you can utilize upto 4 cores in one virtual machine. It makes it easier than having to run two VM's, less memory utilization and if I want, you can fold on 3 cores leaving one open for a gpu.

Here is the link to VMware player.

Some things that you need to do. I use bal3wolfs VM + ubuntu guide. But it should be the same for any.

After installing the new vm player just make one change and it's ready to go. I assume that you already know how to use VMware.

First locate the virtual machine and edit it with notepad.

Then change the cpu to 4.

Now fire up VMware player and see all the points.

I'll give credit where credit is due. I found this over on evga while looking to see if there were issues with my mb. It was more confusing than this, so I made it easier.

Sry I read most of it but basically the new beta version of VMware will be able to utilize 4+ cores? If so, cool!

That's basically it. Instead of running two VM's you only need one, and it eats up less resources than two. Supposedly it only goes up to 4 cores. So i7 with HT will need to run 2 VM's instead of 4.

I'm getting some pretty good ppd right now and it looks like using all 4 cores hasn't took a hit on the gtx 260. It's currently working on an 1888 and ppd dropped, but once it does a 353 I'll know for sure.

I was tired of having to watch and mend two vms because of the bad work units my system has been encountering the past week or so. So I had already been thinking of using the quad for just on client. I ended up installing Vmware workstation 6.5.2 a few days ago and with my Phenom I average about 2 2669 wu's per day. I don't know if I want to screw around much but I think I finally got the nat/bridge worked out, I just got back my cable yesterday and something was different from the wireless dsl to this connection.

ps: I am also using bal3wolfs client coming from error's vm. I tried notfred's but something wasn't quite right, don't know and don't care. bal3wolf's started right up.

I just set it up and indeed it has all four cores 100%. Seems to me that this would yield more ppd than two instances as the ppd goes up the faster the work unit is done. What Im trying to say is one unit done really fast should earn more ppd than two slower.

With this method smp would be alot easier for quads. The work units will finish alot faster which may make smp an option for those that dont want it to take 24 hours for a work unit to complete. Its also easier because just because multiple instances wont need to be setup.

Edit: The screenshot is at 3.2 on a Q6600.

Mine started off great last night, but now it has dropped to 7500ppd. This might be due to the gpu eating some of the resources, but I'll take 9k ppd more over the 8k that the cpu was getting alone.

So the gpu ppd is at 9242 on a 353. Typically it's at 9531 or 9242, but mostly on 9531. So the card loosed 300ppd, but I'm able to fold on all 4 cores of the cpu and still get a lot of points. That's over 16.5k for just my cpu and gpu.

I have never used notfreds, but from the pictures that I have seen, it has options for 2,4 or 8 cores. There is a link to the evga forums at the bottom of the OP where they are talking about it and most are using notfreds.
