Fold! Or Get Folded!
![]() |
Ok well i got tired of running VMware apps so i found out a decently simple way to have linux smp and have the ability to play inside linux
. And seeing the other Linux-VMware Player guide is for a 7.10 VM i figured id show you VMwares new easy VM creation process! Somewhere during this process VMware Player will ask if you want to download the VMware tools for linux. Do it they make it easier to use. 1. Ok first off you need to download and install VMware Player 3. it can be found here ![]() 2. After that you need to download Ubuntu 9.10, which can be found here. Key part here, make sure you click alternative download options, and select 64-bit. ![]() 3. After you download the iso open up VMware Player. Click on the Create Virtual Machine button. ![]() 4. Select the option to create it from a iso and locate your Ubuntu iso file. Click next. ![]() 5. Fill in your username and password (has to be 8 letters/digits long), next change the size of the VM's hard drive space. I recommend 20 so you can also have room to play in linux. But also realize setting it at 20 GB does not mean it will be that big. It will be able to grow to that size if needed if not mines around 3 GB with just folding. 6. Now click next, then click the customize hardware button. ![]() 7. Change the RAM to a nice number you wanna let linux use. I set it to 2 GB's and it flies along. ![]() 8. Then click the processors tab from the left menu and change it to what you would like 2 core or 4 cores. then click ok. ![]() 9. Click finish and let VMware Player do the complete install for you! 10. Login to Ubuntu when it is done installing. 11. Go to here, and download the first client by clicking on the penguin. ![]() 12. After downloading open it and extract it. The normal destination is your home folder. Click create folder in the top right of the window. and type folding (dont capitalize anything). Extract it to this folder. ![]() 13. Open terminal (in the applications tab->Accessories->Terminal) ![]() 14. type "cd ~/folding" with no parenthesis, then hit enter. Your screen should look like this: ![]() 15. Then type "./fah6 -configonly" with no paranthesis, and hit enter 16. Fill in your username and team number 37726! 17. When asked the change advanced options type "yes", then change the interval minutes to "3" and then change the set -advmethods flag always on to "yes" like so: ![]() 18. When asked if you want to ignore any deadline, type "yes" 19. When asked for additional client parameters type "-verbosity 9" you can also type "-smp" make sure you put a space between the verbostiy and 9. Otherwise you get errors. ![]() 20. Well hit enter and get out the config without changing anything else, then you are ready to fold! 21. to start the client type "./fah6 -smp", or if you already typed "-smp" in the parameters section just type "./fah6" . 22. If you close it and want to start it again type "cd ~/folding" into the terminal, then do step #21 again. You can set up fahmon with this from post also find the reported PPD amounts, here Also you can go full screen by clicking the full screen button in VMware player then going to the System tab in ubuntu and then preferences then display, and change the resolution! Enjoy!

FAHmon Guide
1. Go to the VM button on VMware player and click settings, then click network adapters. Change it from NAT to bridged. 2. Now go to terminal and type "ifconfig" then where it says inet addr: is the ip address. Copy this in fahmon //<ip>/folding. Click ok it wont work yet. 3. Now go to your home folder and right click the folding folder, and go down the "share options" click the options to share. You should have to install sharing and restart ubuntu. By restarting i mean restart ubuntu not VMware. So go to the terminal and type "sudo reboot" if you cant find the reboot button hiddenunder the VMware control bar. 4. After you restart go to fahmon and double click the client and when prompted login with your ubuntu credentials. After that reload all clients and it should work! 5. If it just takes you to your document folder in windows then try setting fahmon to go to //<ip>/ then login and once logged in then edit the client and add /folding to the end. Reported PPD For This Client i7 920 @ 3.96 GHz on 4 cores = 6200 ppd Q9450 @ 3.80 Ghz on 4 cores = 6800 ppd

I got all way to the end and now i have a problem. It all seems to work ok but a problem with fahmon.
When i set up the client in fahmon, the location is this correct? \\123.456.7.8\folding\ except the IP address i got earlier in the guide? I also ticked the box when it says tick if it is a virtual client or something. but when i double click it on the last step i get asked for a username and password i put in my ubuntu details but it says incorrect. Am i doing something wrong that you may know of? EDIT: Ok i got it working. When i was restarting ubuntu i want actually logging out i was just closing VMWare Player and opening it again. Thanks for the guide, +rep! ![]() Last question. Im looking at coretemp and all 4 cores are running at around 40-80%. Is this right even though i only set it to 2 earlier in the process?

Bless you for this guide! It is exactly what I was looking for! Switched yesterday from notfred's to bal3wolf's and went from 2500 to 4000 PPD. Going to run it this way once my next WU is complete and will report back on stats. Great job. Rep+
Edit: So I ran this setup and found my PPDs much lower than bal3wolf's client, averaging 10 minutes per frame, versus around 6:45 to 7:15. Are there some optimizations I need to tune or something? Thanks,

are u set for the same amount of cores? the difference you say is a huge difference. Ive not seen that kind of difference error10 and baowolf were withing 10 seconds per frame. This one was slightly faster than error10s. that kind of drop sounds like 1 core instead of 2 cores or etc.

Can someone explain how to do this in VMWare workstation with Kubuntu? I don't have a 64 bit Ubuntu image around, and my bandwidth sucks.
