Default Folding Advice Please

Ive only been folding for a month or so, using the GPU client. Im happy with the output Im getting but have been toying with the idea of whether to use my CPU in the mix.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere on this forum that it is not worth the effort to fold on anything less than a quad.

1) Can someone confirm that please
2) If I can fold on my CPU (see sig) suggestions on a suitable client.
3) Any other suggestion to increase output, apart from OC the gpu, which I have done.

Thanks in advance.

If you'd like to maximize the PPD from your CPU you'll want to use a VMware client, check this thread out to see how to set it up.

My E8400 using the SMP client from Folding at home puts out around 1300 points per day using both cores. Not a huge gain, but my computer is on anyways for my GPU's and every point helps.

I second the VMware client. When I did it on my Quad, I saw about a 100% increase in PPD compared to windows SMP client. And you can run it in conjunction with your gpu client. Makes the numbers soar.

In the end, we all like to see numbers, but I remember feeling a certain level of satisfaction knowing that I might be helping with the next big breakthrough. Always remember that we fold for the cause. When I could fold, that cause was to not have my future children see the same diseases/problems that I've seen.

Edit: Also, OC that E8400...3.8GHz should be easy mode with 4.0 requiring a bit of effort.

My thoughts exactly, thats why i said "output" and not "points". Small difference in terms but not in sentiment.

Well more points usually means more work units completed, which is the goal right?

Completely agree, I just want to make sure that people don't lose sight of why F@H exists. One of our own members testimonials.

Go with Notfred's without a doubt; it's very easy to set up and brings a nice PPd boost over the SMP client.

You might want to use a program like Setpriority or Prifinity to change the priority though. Sometimes the VMware takes the CPU usage away from the GPU, cutting your PPD.

Well, maybe I was a tad tired last night but the VMware seemed to be a beast to set up, so I tried out the SMP client.

This seemed to go okay and it eventually kicked off with a PPD of @ 550. I thought I would wait and see how it went before I OC the CPU.

I was happy with that, so I went to bed.

When I awoke this morning, I was greeted with a freshly booted computer...

When i started the clients and ran FAHMON, it advised me that both the clients where "hung". Once they started running again, the clients appear to have picked up where they left off so I left them to it and went to work.

Any ideas as to what may have caused this? I tried googling but all I came up with was Linux referrences.

You could have an unstable OC on your CPU which caused a reboot, that or windoze update restarted your PC for you.

Edit: If your OCing your CPU make sure its at least 6 hours stable on Prime95 (You don't wan't to send them invalid results).

I would recommend putting the effort into the VMware linux clients as the client is waaaaaay faster.

If you want to OC your GPU for more ppd the only thing that matters is the shader clock, underclocking the core helps with temps and lets you get a higher shader clock.
