Default VMWare CPU Performance

I thought the VMWare SMP client was only supposed to use 2 cores. I notice in the VMWare Player window it says "Found 2 processors". @ some point a while ago, I think I had seen usage per core in Task Manager showing 2 out of 4 cores much busier than the other two, as I had expected. But this morning I am seeing all 4 cores at high loads, in both Process Explorer, Core Temp, and Task Manager (Windows 7 x64, 4 GB DDR2 RAM @840). Can anyone explain this?

Also, maybe I should address this in another thread, but I don't think I'm seeing the performance I'd expect from my Phenom running @ 3675. I am stable on Prime 95 for over an hour, temps never go about 52, nots ure where the bottleneck, if any, is.

Thanks,

What processes do you have running? Open your task manager, go to the processes tab and sort them by CPU use. That will show you what the vmware is using and what other applications are hogging your CPU.

also, there is a new vmplayer that will use all 4 cores if you tell it to.

I had already checked on the other processes, and there is practically nothing worth noting, other than two instances of the GPU console client, each consuming 5-7% CPU, and I do have the CPU affinity lock applied on them. I guess I should check that new vmplayer out since it might double my PPD and if I'm using all 4 cores with this version anyway. . .

thanks,

The newest version of VMware supports up to 4 cores.

With the new vmware set to all four cores, my Q9450 at 3800 does one frame in four minutes flat. That is for wu 2671 and i have been getting a few of these lately.

Yeah, I downloaded and am running the Notfred's client now on the 3.0 version. I was interested in trying bal3wolf's vm, but can't seem to find a link to it. Unless I did find it, and it's the "VMWare-FAH-0.2" that I downloaded. Thought I might try that, too.

Notfred's was showing about 2700 PPD on 3 cores, I could live with that, just hoping for better still. . .

Yes, and they fold along happily, using usually about 5% CPU each, and are getting as high as 1800 PPD, which is about as much as I can expect on a pair of 3870's. For some reason, anytime I have CAL_NO_FLUSH set to anything, I get unstable machine, so I just use the other 3.

All I need now is to find the balwolf's VM that I've read about... or do you guys think I should just stick with Notfred's, which has been 100% reliable?

I started having problems with the pre-made player clients, so i installed the new vmware, the new ubuntu and a fresh copy of the smp client. I am very pleased with the ppd from my little rig with this setup.

That sounds like something I'd like to try. I already have the new vmware (3.0 player), jus don't know where to proceed from here. I downloaded ub1.5.exe but I suspect you mean a newer ubuntu.
