Default VMWare worth it?

Hey i've been folding on my PC for a week or so now and did a little on my ps3 (until the HDMI cable broke )

My GPU seems ok, so i set up a normal CPU client in windows and i only got about 300 or something PPD, and someone told me i ned to set up VMWare. I've looked at a few guides and it seems to take ages and looks really confusing :S

Is it really worth folding on my CPU, anyone else with PhII 940 who has VMWare set up and what PPD do you get?

Thanks!

I have had amazing luck with this for 20 months of use. Its a few steps but if you follow it to the letter its easy to do.

Thanks for the link, ill try setting it up now

More PPD the better

Hmm the screen shots dont match up, seems a little old. Still, i should be able to figure it out. I just wdont want to do anything wrong, or download the wrong thing

Also, that guide says downlaod VMWare server, and another says to download VMWare Player. Does this make a diffference?

Its worth it, I have the same CPU as you and im getting around 4-5k PPD on it @ 3.6GHz with VMware and notfreds client.

Heres a link to setting up F@H on VMwareplayer its really easy just follow the steps. I used this guide originally to get my self set up.

Edit: You want VMware player.

VMware Server worked well on xp, but it doesn't play nice on vista. VMware Player works well with vista and 7. If you download the latest beta version of VMware player, it will utilize all 4 cores of your 940 instead of the usual two.

Best guide (in my opinion) for VMware setup:
http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=599272

I got double PPD from SMP to VMware; 250-500 PPD on this Pentium D. Couldn't get it setup nicely with the GPU client though so lost alot of PPD on that side, so just went back to SMP.

You might have better luck though And if you do, it'll be worth it.

I was using one of the pre-made vmware files, but i dont remember which one. I stopped last week when it stopped downloading new projects and i didnt set it up to do it. I installed the beta player and a new copy of ubuntu with the linux smp client. This has proven to be very productive as far as ppd goes. I can also run my gpu client and only lose a couple of hundred ppd.

Totally worth it!!!
I run 1 instance all the time. I only shut it down on intensive games. I get 2.5k on that one instance so 5k for two.

Here is what I use. Easy as pie.

To run another instance, just copy the folding Vmware file (.vmx I think) and rename it to folding 2. The benefit is that each instance runs on 2 cores, so 2 instances would be double the PPD
