you should have a "Folding@home-Win32-x86.exe" That is the one to run after it is all set up. It should stay open...

Are you running Windows 7 or Vista?

You can use VMPlayer and follow this guide to set up a virtual linux client. It's what I use and I love it. Plus running a linux client will net more PPD (points per day).

yes, If you are willing to give linux a try, this would be your best option. To me, it sounds like a windows problem you are having with it not staying open.
Running a virtual machine for folding really is pretty easy. It is also easy to pause and save the state of the virtual machine if you want to stop folding for gaming or turning off the computer.

The Windows clients can be a PITA. That was the main reason I moved to the virtual machine linux clients, not to mention they net more points overall. It's a win win situations as far as I'm concerned. There are other clients and setups for linux if you look at this link.

Here's the solution to your original problem. Replace the .exe in the SMP folder with this one.

VMware is the way to go though. It gives far better PPD than the SMP client so if you can get that up and running you'll benefit in the long run
