a mode of distributed computing, when a study needs to be conducted but the cost of a computer large enough to handle all the work is too great, the host sends out work units to willing participants who donate their time and computers to the cause, folding is the search for a cure for cancer, there are others like S.E.T.I, search for extra terrestrial intelligence
you are sent work units by a university conducting study on molecules, you receive a work unit and use a program on your pc or ps3 to complete the work unit, then you send it back, the study is to determine how molecules do whatever molecules do. to see if they can be used in the fight against cancer..... does that explain it well enough.. i did it for a few weeks, got 100 wu's done but then my ps3 crapped itself, i didnt join any team or group cause i was unsure how to for ps3, but basically if you intend to do it full time like most do, then you can join a team and compete with other teams for most wu's completed

Folding is what a molecule does when it "reproduces", no?
Most folding is done with some form of a Protein molecule if I'm not mistaken. The misfolding of a Protein causes many different diseases, most notably being Cancer.

![]() See these people? They are folding for a cause. to help people with diseases by providing researchers information on proteins !

Well yes and no... Folding occurs when RNA (ribonucleic acid), which is a copy of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), is translated into an amino acid chain which then begins to fold according to various types of forces between different types of amino acids throughout the chain. This creates a very specific shape which is unique to the specific protein (or enzyme) and which allows it to function in a specific way. During cellular reproduction, specific proteins are required so the produstion of that specific peice of RNA goes up, which causes the amount of amino acid chains produced to go up etc, etc...

The only reason I understood any of this was because of Biology. Thank you, Van Ryn.
