New to folding... question:

What's a really good PPD value per day for a single machine?

I'm currently doing between 10,000 and 12,000 points per day on my i7 running the gpu client and 3 VMs. I'm wondering if this is considered worthy of the hardware (sig machine) or if I could tweak more out of it?

I also haven't figured out if I should be telling these ubuntu VMs I'm using 8 processors, 4 processors or 2 processors (ie whats the best way to distribute the load on the corei7)

cheers and thanks in advance,
Ed

Another n00b question:

GPU client: Does it run faster with the "display" off?

VMs: Is it worthwhile to set their system priority to "realtime" instead of normal? That goes for GPU too.. by default it uses low system priority - is it worth turning it up?

Folding (to me anyway) is downloading a project from Stanford University. Your computer (CPU or GPU) then completes this project in a certain timeframe. It then sends the results back to Stanford, downloads another and starts the process again.

These projects analyze how proteins fold under certain situations. When these proteins 'misfold' they can cause diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and Huntington's. By recreating the situation where the proteins misfold, we can work out how to stop them from misfolding.

By sending out projects to hundreds and thousands of computers worldwide, Stanford don't need to buy a super-computer to do the job, and allow folders to be a part of the research.

Yes that client works fine for the CPU.

You should also download the GPU client; that 9800GTX+ folds quite well

Just go to the downloads section on Stanford's site, go to the "High Performance" clients and get the GPU2 client for nVidia. It's alot faster than the CPU.

Also, you should get Fahmon for your folding and PPD (points per day).
