Default B-hopping: Tutorial and Awareness Thread

Well! I just got banned on the OCN GunGame server for bhopping, there was no warning so I assumed that because I managed to climb to an impressive speed, hax were assumed, and I was banned on the spot. So i figured I'd write this tutorial / awareness thread so people know what it is, how to do it, and most importantly (to me anyway ), that it isn't cheating.

Introduction to Bhopping:
Bunny Hopping is a method of increasing ones speed via jumping, in some games simply jumping straight repeatedly will be faster than running, Half-Life 2, for example. Other games have made sure that this doesnt work, but left the strafing mechanics untouched making bhopping with strafe keys a possibility.

How Do You Bhop?
I'll get straight to the point, because this will most likely benefit OCN GunGame players, or anyone that plays on scoutzknivez servers, lets stick to Source, shall we? Low-gravity makes bhopping much easier, however, it is still possible to get to very impressive speeds under normal settings (especially if airacc is jacked, more on that later).

-Preparation:
The first thing you need to do in order to bhop well is to bind your mousewheel, either up or down (or both), to jump. This way, as you are about to touch the ground you can roll your mousewheel and get a perfectly timed jump, every time.

-In the Air:
While in the air there is one important rule: "w" and "s" keys don't exist. The ONLY time you should be pressing either of these keys is when you are quite an accomplished bhopper and want to show off by air-strafing SIDEWAYS. Otherwise, its "a" and "d" all the time. If you want to go to the left, you press "a" and push your mouse to the left, if you want to go right, you push "d" and push your mouse to the right, if you want to got straight, you switch between going left and going right.

-TakeOff:
The same rule applies, you want to be pressing either "a" or "d" when you first jump. You may want to look into the method that KZers in 1.6 use for long jumps. I'm not sure exactly how it goes, but to start you hold "w" and the strafe of your choice and then just before you jump you release "w".. there is some movement side to side that maximizes distance if I remember correctly, but I never was very good at KZ and especially not long jumps >.<

-Link It!
As I have already discussed, you should roll your mousewheel to get a perfectly timed jump. It is also important that you DONT stop strafing, do the same thing you were doing in the air when you jump. The bunny hop is also the most important part of air-strafing for gaining speed in source, in 1.6 more speed is gain by air-strafing well than by bunny hops. Jump off of the ground strafing the sime direction as you were coming down on it, making a more drastic shift will increase speed more (pushing your mouse faster in the strafe direction when you jump), but don't go overboard! The "sv_airaccelerate" on the OCN GunGame server seems to be untouched (still at 10?) so if you are too drastic with your shifts (push the mouse to fast) you will end up loosing speed and falling. On some scoutzknivez servers the airacc is as high as the thousands and you can even strafe as well crouched as you can standing (standing is superior for the most part because you strafe faster while standing then crouched, of course).

-Practice!
If you know the server settings on the GunGame server, make your own server and practice bhopping. If I were to guess I'd say the gravity is around 200, everything else untouched, but I could be wrong.

Other tutorials:

Sheer Madness (some crazy videos that show how ridiculous bhopping can be):
-1.6 Bhopping:

-Source Bhopping:
(mostly what I do, but the airacc in this vid is crazy: )

Have Fun!

everyone knows about bhopping...you're not that special. I also don't think you had to come in here and type this, it can be found anywhere.

Well thanks for the post, but a number of people have asked me how I do it ingame and I just got banned and this is the only thing I could think of as a reason. I have no claims to being special at all. but flame away, i could care less.

Why do you have to be such a jerk about it? He's just trying to help out people who want to learn about/how to bunny hop..

It's not that hard, one of the first things I learned how to do in css. It's mostly a show off type of thing. But be WARNED, b-hopping is illegal in a lot of competitive leagues and you can be disqualified for doing it during a live match.

I don't believe you got banned by Bhopping. What was your name? I can figure out who banned you and why. Recently there were 2 persons banned by accident because of a name faker.

*EDIT*

BTW. I am a past admin, and when playing on the server I also bhopped

You were not included in the accidental bannings recently. We are looking into this.
