I for one believe that improper use of "their", they're", and "there" should be met with a swift pummeling by the ban hammer.

In all seriousness, people need to at least put a little effort into posting with proper grammar.

Reputation

The reputation system is intended to acknowledge members who have contributed to the forum, essentially a tally of "thank yous" for good work. In general, rep should be given to any member who provides help to you in a thread or who posts an exceptional post anywhere on the site. Rep should not be given for information shared in a PM, for posts that are not helpful, or for any frivolous reason. You may not ask for or offer to give reps for help; it is understood that members will give reps when they are deserved. For more details, read the Reputation Defined thread.
OK i whole heartedly agree with this thread. Except for the part in bold.

Don't you think it is a little tedious and over 'dramatic' to enforce such a rule You talk about professionalism, yet motivation is a huge role in a professional environment and you seem to be frowning upon it.

I can think of several positive effects of offering 'rep' for productive posts.

A) It encourages people to give you an in depth explanation. OK, it shouldn't be this way, i agree. But that is the way things work and it will never change. So fighting it just seems a little pointless. Some people are driven by knowing they will receive a rep, and why shouldn't the OP be willing to show they will appreciate quality posts?

B) It will give new users an understanding of what 'rep' is. Lets face it, OCN doesn't have a pop up explaining rep when you subscribe. I mean fair enough, it is simple to grasp. Hell this is my first and only forum and i knew what the rep feature was without even seeing it before.

But the fact is, some people don't know what it is and never even notice it. So when they see people offering rep for help, they may do a little bit of research or just realize what it is for.

There are no negative aspects of 'offering' rep. It is a motivational tool, and if some people need motivation then so be it. Not everyone can put their time into things without motivation, and to criticize against that seems a bit over critical.

Well that is just my 2pence worth. I don't like cents

Bump. Some people need a reminder. Especially with OCN hitting the Digg frontpage, and having about 50 linkbacks to Nitteo's folding thread. Now is really the time to show everyone what kind of community we really are.
