Default RigBuilder

I am excited to announce that we are currently developing a new custom application for overlock.net called RigBuilder. The purpose of this application will be to allow our members more flexibility in designing new computers. RigBuilder will use the PriceGrabber © engine to select from thousands of available parts from a multitude of different vendors. So when your rig is “built” you can easily see how much it will cost and which vendors you could use.

In order to use rig builder all you need to do is use a simple search feature and begin selecting components. As you select components RigBuilder will keep a running total of your build. You will be able to add as many or as few components as you want. As you add your components your build is automatically saved to your profile.

In order to make the best product possible we will count on feedback from you. What things would you like to see in this type of application? We are still in the design phase, so now is the time to get those suggestions in. Let us know what you think.

The basic package is slated to be completed in the first quarter of 2008. The timing is partially dependant on the ideas that we get from the members. If we get a bunch of ideas that we just can't pass up, that may extend the time to develop. We will keep everyone posted on the progress.

Excellent idea! It will cut down on a lot of the "$xxx budget, what should I buy?" threads!

Plus it should generate quite a bit of ad revenue for OCN

I can see this being very useful for all members of OCN only if it is not just grabbing USA prices, since we have people all over the world actively posting here and using the features we have. I would like to see the main regions being able to use this feature…

USA
UK
Australia
Europe (Can be done as a whole as Europe is single currency)

Being able to select a region which will grab only prices from within the selected would be very helpful or being able to select more than one region and having it compare prices from all regions selected.

I don’t know how easy this would be to do but I really think it would make this feature a lot more promising for all members here.

Looking forward to seeing this happen along with all the new things happening.

It does appear that PriceGrabber will support a few different regions. I don't know exactly how diverse they are able to select products at this time. I can see however just from a cursory examination that US, Canada, UK and Mexico are being supported. This will certainly be something we check into further.

Are these going to be able to be integrated into a post in the forums, like say in "Go Advanced" there is some sort of "add rigbuilder rig" that will output it in a nice neat format so that when people make the "does this rig look good threads" they will all be formatted the same, really being easier to read in general?

BRFD can give you more details, but from the very preliminary work I've seen, it will be nicely integrated into posts in a consistent format. It should be a very slick tool.
