I think allowing a pre-made case in pro should be allowed. It can be very hard to mod a case and make it unique, just look at my Armor Reborn mod if you have any doubts, lol. That was a huge challenge to pull off the front the way I wanted it.

I agree with the break down that Ice put up, seems to give a good idea as to what the differences between categories are.

Honestly I am entering a pre-made case to save me time for other things in the project. I already know I can make drive bays and flat panels, so there is no reason for me to spend any time proving I can make something from scratch that I have sitting already made in front of me.

Not to say that making the whole case from scratch is bad, but it only is worthwhile when the case itself is "special purpose". For most traditional cases, a pre-made works out being cheaper. Just enough raw aluminum to make a Lian Li for example, costs as much if not more than just buying one already made. If I accounted for my labor it would cost me $1200 each to make Lian Li clones.

@ iandh Exactly I am close to $500 in materials so far with Liquid ice and still have to buy a bit more stuff nevermind the time it takes to build a scratch built case.

I like this description as well, for one reason. It doesn't contain the words experienced or beginner.

For example: I'm a beginner to PC building in general. I have very limited experience case modding. I have, however, been working with various fabrication methods that can be readily applied to building a PC and/or case modding for more years than some of our entrants have probably been alive. I consider myself to be of a relatively high skill level in these areas, although technically, I am a "beginner" to this particular hobby.

Really, ice_owl summed it up very well. The only thing I might change is some of the semantics. I would say: "Very high details" to me implies intricacy, which is not necessarily a prereq for professional level craftsmanship. Gothic vs. Scandinavian Modern. French Lace vs. Japanese Silk.

Another way to look at it: Give a classroom full of high school shop students the task of building a 9x12 picture frame out of 1x2 pine board, with no other guidance, other than the router bench was off-limits. A sketchup of each project would look pretty much the same; but the results you would receive could be easily classified into Amateur through Pro. Amateurs would be the students that used butt joints and wood glue. Intermediate would be the kids that mitered their corners. Pro would be the kids that stayed after school to finish, using biscuit joints, tongue and groove, dove tails, etc. to hold their project together.

Other elements, such as functionality, effectiveness, uniqueness of design and implementation, etc. These I think should be criteria available for consideration in every category.

FWIW I also don't think pro = scratch built. Reference Cyberdruid, MNPCTech, or Marcus000 for any number of examples of professional grade work on pre-fab chassis.

I also don't think monetary investment should be a factor whatsoever for entry level to any given category. (this was mentioned in the other thread)

I must agree with you on the monetary value of the 'package' when done. Not alot of people can afford to drop a bunch of cash on the parts for their mod, or the hardware that goes in it. This should be about taking what you have and making it great. Just my two cents.
