Default Gameservers Supervisor (CLOSED)

The time has come for Overclock.net to have a dedicated individual who supervises the operation of all of our gameservers. This used to be a duty shared amongst a few members of the Director staff, but increased workload for them and increased time demand for the servers has left us in a position where we feel the best solution is to bring in another individual for the sole purpose of handling those servers.

What we're looking for in a Gameserver Supervisor
- Excellent written communication skills
- Great people skills
- A helping demeanor
- Experience in administration and management of public game servers
- Perspective, vision, character
- An active presence on the overclock.net forum (ideally 5+ days per week)
- Patience and persistence
- A thick skin
- Dedication to the site and its members
- Proactive yet cautious approach

The role of the Gameserver Supervisor

- To ensure visitors and members have the best experience possible when visiting Overclock.net's game servers
- To uphold the rules/TOS/values of the community directly and through the server admins
- To stimulate participation and growth
- To be a staple within the community through routine and consistent presence
- To maintain the upkeep and appearance of the game servers

Pay (or lack of :/)

Officially this is a volunteer (no pay) position. However, the Supervisor will receive:
- A great opportunity to guide elements of a major overclocking community (and hey - it's an excuse to play some games, too )
- An overclocked.net email address
- Other small perks over the course of time

Who can be nominated?
- Any member may be nominated
- We encourage people to nominate themselves if they feel they meet the qualifications

Please send your applications or nominations to me, Chipp, via PM or email. Don't hesitate to "advertise" yourself! We're interested in seeing all of your strengths and qualifications for the position. If you plan on making a nomination for someone else, "advertise" for them in the nominations. Again, we'd like to know not just who you/they are, but why that person would be a good fit for the position.

Should we also mention what games we own so we're not expected to administrate gameservers we cannot possibly get into? I, for example, don't own TF2(I've tried it, and it's just too insane for me to bother with), and I can't get a Punkbuster account registered for COD4(Not that I want to, too much nadespam from what I hear)

This specific role is geared less at actual in-game admining, and more twords promotion and upkeep of the servers along with supervision of the admins for each server to ensure that they, too, are reflecting the interests of the site and community in their actions. I would consider typical duties to be applying patches / updates, configuration of map rotations or other server settings, upkeep and installation of the plugins we use, etc.

There really never was a dedicated person - bigvaL handled a lot with the BF2 and CS:S servers, DigitalPhreak worked with CS:S, too, and Evil XP2400 worked with TF2. That sort of mis-matched staff is one of the reasons why we're looking for a person to work with all of our game servers (currently CS:S Gungame, TF2, and COD:4).

Please send nominations via PM or email.

Ahh, so most of this is done via some sort of console then. I see, I see.

Yeah I think the idea would be for the supervisor would keep the servers patched up to date, running smoothly, and update the map cycle enough to keep things interesting. The admins in game can deal with the potty mouths and teamkillers.

I think the current largest problem with our game servers is lack of routine maintenance. I hope this fixes that.

I nominate myself.

I used to run a few Runescape and WoW servers back in the day, and I also ran a CS:S server for a while. (10Mb/s down AND up is such a sick thing to have for a home connection )

I also really don't have any projects or big to-do's in the next year.

As for written communication skills, I wrote this résumé to be a part-time WoW server developer which I decided to pull out of:
Quote:
1) How old are you?
I am fifteen years old (07/19/93).

2) How well do you know the World of Warcraft game/environment?
I played retail World of Warcraft for a year before coming to ---------: if you say a name or a place I know what and where you're talking
about, I've played every class for at least a small amount of time, I know how the combat system works, etc.

3) Have you ever set up your own private server? If so, what did you use, and how did you do it?
Yes, I have set up a private server before. I ran a dual-socket Xeon computer out of my house running Antrix and MySQL, while my friend had
the website and logon server running out of his house. I don't recall what version or distribution of the MySQL database we used.

4) Have you ever been banned? If so, why?
No, I have not been banned on --------- or retail World of Warcraft.

5) What programming language do you specialize in?
I work with C++ and Visual Basic.net, which I mostly use to make small programs for myself when I have a need that someone else's free
programs don't fill. I normally end up releasing my creations to the community to hopefully help someone else out as well.

6) Why do you think you should become a dev, and what can you bring to our team?
I believe that I would help by attempting to increase both BurningFusion and FireFusion's up time by putting down spontaneous bugs, while
aiding others when they have too daunting of a task. I also try to always keep a positive attitude and focus on moving forward.

7) If you were to become a dev, what would be your primary goal?
If I were to be allowed to be a part of ---------'s management team, I would primarily focus on preventing server crashing bugs, and in the
case of one, returning the server(s) to their previous state.

8) How much time are you willing to dedicate to developing for our servers?
I plan on monitoring both servers at least between 3:00PM to 9:00PM Sunday through Thursday and between 12:00AM to 10:30PM on Fridays
and Saturdays.

9) What timezone are you in (GMT)?
I am located in Sacramento, California, which sets me in GMT-8:00.

10) Do you have experience in being a developer? If so, what were you doing?

No, I do not have any formal experience developing for anyone other than myself, but I was hoping to begin here at ---------.

11) Do you have ventrilo and a working microphone?
Yes, I have Ventrilo installed on my computer and have a functioning microphone.

12) Please provide some example work, and explain exactly what it does.
Example 1: [C++] antrix_manager (Binary Only)
antrix_manager is a tool for generating Antrix and logon server configuration files. To see the list of possible commands, type "help" and hit
enter. Please note that the output files probably will not work with Ascent or new versions of logon servers.

Example 2: [VB.net] WoWTools (Binary Only)
WoWTools is just a general compilation of World of Warcraft modification tools made for MMOwned.com (the full thread on MMOwned can be
found here). You don't have to extract it to C: if you don't want to, and everything should still work fine.

Example 3: [C++] PPI Calculator (Binary and Source)
PPI Calculator is a program that takes your monitor's diagonal size and resolution and then determines how many pixels per square inch (PPI) it has, along with estimations on the screen's physical dimensions.

I do have another C++ example called WoWConnect (a realmlist switcher; I had a thread at MMOwned for this also, and it can be found here),
but I can't get to my laptop at the moment. I should have it back by the end of this week, when I will provide the binary for WoWConnect
and the sources for WoWConnect and antrix_manager.

I decided to rebuild WoWConnect from scratch, rather than wait to get my laptop back.

Example 4: [C++] WoWConnect2 (Binary and Source)
WoWConnect2 is the remake of my original WoWConnect. It's a realmlist switcher, that on the first time being run, askes for a list of servers you use and then remembers them. Then you can pick an option from the menu, which it will change your realmlist.*** file to what you specified and then start wow.exe. To "install" it just put it in your World of Warcraft folder.

13) Do you have anything else you would like to include in your application?
I build custom computers in my free time, and if there were any problems with server hardware (assuming that --------- doesn't rent
servers), I can guide someone through the troubleshooting and give them the possible solutions for the problem. I also speak quite a bit of
French, and if someone would need help with a translation I could work with them.
