Concerning the Thread Tagging system

Hello everybody,

Regrettably, we have had an issue recently with the thread tagging feature on the site and quite frankly, it has gotten completely out of control. Just recently, we pulled a list of all tags added to threads in the last 24 hours and of approximately 30 new tags, a grand total of 5 were deemed to be useful and appropriate. Others ranged from the immature to the blatantly insulting, or worse.

The "fix" for this issue is simple: The feature was abused, so it is being turned off.

When properly used, thread tags can be a wonderful way to search and browse content and can also help with search engine optimization. It is our hope that after we take the time to further clean up the existing tags (around 3600 tags in total have already been removed) we can bring back the feature. Also, we understand that many of our members have been using the tag system properly and for that we thank you. Unfortunately, the proper usage was overshadowed by the vast amount of improper usage. When the system returns we will provide more guidance on creating tags and spotting tags that are not appropriate.

Tags should only be for the creator of the thread and there should be a set list of tags to choose from.

Thanks, and yeah I've seen quite a few threads with blatantly insulting tags in them. I don't know why people take joy from putting down people's threads like that..

I hate useless tags on USEFUL threads.

I'll be one to admit that I put somewhat humerous tags on spam and posts by bots - threads which are to be deleted anyways.

I have a feeling that the thread tag abusers are a small group, so if we disabled the tag feature for an individual after say three offenses, it would weed those folks out right quick...

I also agree that only a small minority abuse this. Whenever I get the chance I add 2 tags to a thread that are applicable to the thread. *shrug*. Never saw it useful anyways, TBH.
