Actually I prefer using a belt driven one and easier to fix too . Shaft ones tend to lose more power than belts. Though a lot of companies are starting to use shaft instead. I'm assuming the guid was talking about the Tamiya TT01 since it is one of the more popular shaft RC cars. There isn't any tracks here either so I just drift in my driveway or I go to an empty parking lot.

thats what I was thinking of doing

would you recommend 4wd? the guide also said that 4wd was easier to control...
and they said that you could make spare tires out of PVC pipe

4wd is pretty much the only way to go into RC drifting, plus I don't think they have very many 2wd hobby grade on road RC cars. Yeah you can make them out of PVC or ABS. Preferably ABS since it has a better slip to grip ratio. Also drift tires are a must. Regular rubber or foam tires have way to much grip.
