Default Counter Strike : Source Basic/Advanced Tips And Tricks

If there is any chance of a Moderator Stickying this, that would be awesome. Please send me a PM if there are any questions.

STOP. BEFORE YOU POST KNOW THE RULES.
1. NO FLAMING.
2. This guide is of my own. If you want to provide your own set of tips, then make your own thread!
3. I appreciate feedback, but do not disrespect me because you think something i posted is wrong in your opinion.
4. See rule 2.

Because i am a nice guy, if you read this guide and require more assistance, or a visual demonstration i would be more than happy to help. If you also feel you are more advanced or want map specific help, add me on steam ("marinesold" is the steam name) send me a message, or PM me here on the forums, and i would love to mentor.

Overview of Guide:

This guide is in multiple parts, Introduction, Basic Strats and guidelines, and Advanced Techniques and tips.

Each new section is denoted with bold letters stating the contents therein of each section.

Introduction :
Through the few years i've played counter strike source, i've picked up plenty of tricks and things from pro's, videos, first hand experience, and so on. Here's a compilation of the most important ones to help any up and coming CS:S'ers and anyone looking for a little help to get better.

Basic Techniques and Strats :

We will start basic.

1A.The golden rule, Avoid spraying unless you are extremely close range! Too often i see people who sneak up on someone, and instead of taking the quick shot to the face, they spray! Usually this results in missing the target partially, or all together and the person turning back to you and killing you.

Avoid Spraying unless you have some type of SMG based weapon, or a para in close range. Seriously.

1B.If you do spray, the recoil always tends to fan upwards with every weapon, after the first 5-8 shots in a spray, less when running and spraying, move your weapon down a good bit from the desired target area. Generally you should be aiming for the head, so you would bring your crosshairs to roughly just above the waist.

Special Tip :Generally, recoil tends to vary between up and down obviously, but almost every weapon tends to favor the left side of the crosshair as far as recoil goes. As you bring your crosshair down slightly to make up for the kick back on the recoil, perhaps bring it slightly right as well. This takes practice, but once perfected will make you quite deadly.

2A.The best way to kill someone at medium to long range with nearly any weapon, is to 2 shot burst your weapon. This does not mean, 2 shots, let go of the trigger, and then immediately slam back on it. This means take 2 shots, wait about a second, take another 2 shots. Sometimes 3 is acceptable depending on how many enemies are around (you might get lucky and the 3rd shot hits one of the other targets) and how close you are to the target. Medium range i would say 3 shots with the m4, 2 shots with the ak, long range, 2 shots with m4 and ak. This takes practice, but you will learn exactly how to fine tune pause periods and techniques to get the bullets to hit.

3A.Always buy armor if you can afford it. Helmet + Kevlar combo. If you can't afford a primary, buy a desert eagle, and if you can only afford armor, follow a group of team mates in a public server and pick up the weapon of a fallen comrade. Don't be afraid to use your usp or glock, with practice both of these weapons are actually very powerful in close range. In a scrim... well, you should already know all this, but get a team mate to buy you a weapon, or save money as a team (i won't get into scrim tactics too much... not for this guide, i'll make another later for scrimmaging and match tactics.)

4A.Sprinting fire is very inaccurate. Try to strafe left and right, and try to fire when you make the shift change for the most accuracy. This tactic works best if you strafe left, then as you start to go right, fire your burst, strafe right for the second or so pause, then strafe left again, and as you strafe left at the very start take another burst fire. This will provide the most accurate moving + firing technique.

5A.Be more efficient in your buy menu. The faster you buy your gear every round, the better chance you have of getting the jump on the other team. Something i like to do, is bind the starter pistol for each side to a gear setup of Kevlar + Helmet, HE nade, Flashbang (and defuse kit if ct). From there i just buy my primary weapon, or any other additional gear i need (maybe an extra flash or a smoke).

Advanced Techniques and Tips :

1A.When rushing in a public server, learn the spawns. Learn the routes, and learn the maps. If you want to rush long A on dust 2, but you get a spawn in the back corner... don't try to rush long A anymore. You will be too late to the chase because other CTs or Ts with better spawns will beat you there.

2A.When using the desert eagle, people tend to spam fire the weapon. You have 7 shots only and if you spam them all, you will be lucky to land 3. (the usual amount of body shots it takes to get 1 kill, 1 shot to the head will put someone down instantly, however) Wait about half a second longer and even when running the desert eagle will be very accurate. It will feel like you are going to get less kills, but in reality you will land 3 shots faster with good aim and pausing longer then you would to spam with good aim.

3A. Very Advanced TechniqueWhen trying to assault an awp user, at any real range it is extremely difficult to avoid death. The best tactics to use are to pop around the corner for a half second or less, and pop back. As soon as you hear the awp'er miss the shot, sprint around the corner and try to get a shot off on the head as fast as possible. This takes hard practice and work, but once perfected you will be a force to be reckoned with. Smoke grenades are the best cover system in the game. They don't block bullets, but they are portable. Learn to smoke out common awp spots to avoid getting picked at the same place every time. And lastly, flash grenades blind people. We all know this. But if you blind the awp'er you can easily over take him with 2 or more people, and by yourself with practice. The awp'er will either return to his post after he is no longer flashed if it sounds quiet, or if your making lots of noise (running basically, shooting as well) he will take up the next closest awp post that will result in your death. Learn all the common spots on the map and bring plenty of flash grenades and smoke grenades.

4A.When planting the bomb, plant for a spot that you can easily defend. A great example of this is planting the bomb at the corner of A on dust 2, and then awping defusers from the snake pit.

4B.When defending the bomb, if you cannot awp or snipe from a distance, find a corner or a hidden spot near the bomb. Listen for the defuse sound, assume the defuser has a kit, and use the 3 second rule. If you do not hear another defuse sound after 3 seconds (count a tiny bit fast for insurance) then assume the defuser is going all the way with the defuse. If you do hear another sound then start the 3 second count all over again. Once you don't hear the defuse sound after 3 seconds, pop out for the kill, or throw a flash grenade. The defuser will be blind for the kill, or will force the person to miss the defuse allowing the bomb to explode depending how much time is remaining on the timer. Optionally, throwing the flash at the head of the target will interrupt the defuse.

Nice guide btw.
1.4? lol try beta 5.2 (still my favorite). The network cafe in my neighborhood had that beta installed on 200 computers and never upgraded. So thats the version we (me and friends) played for years.

Haha, never tried beta before, started off on 1.1.

Still hosted on WON? haha, and remember the single player training? Heh.
Everyone had like 150-1000 ping through 56k, and 150 was counted as a good ping.

Time has changed.
