If that doesn't help, it's a bit hard to narrow things down, but I'd start by (unfortunately) completely uninstalling the game and then reinstalling.

On a side note, are you by any change using more then 2 RAM modules? It's sounds odd, but HL2 seems to have difficultly allocating system memory in some machines. I've only seen it happen a few times though.

Yeah, I guess I should update the graphics card drivers. I'm only using 2 RAM modules, 4 GB is enough for me right now, especially when I need winter tires on my car. I tried re-installation with the game already, no good..seems like other people are having issues though, hopefully it's just me terribly bad timing on buying the game, and it'll be fixed soon

Ok..well I don't think it has anything to do with your computer.

I just went into my Steam Games list and I tried to start up HL2 and it said:

"This game is currently unavailable. Please try again at another time."

Probably its an update or something related.

Try putting -32 in the launch options and force it to run in 32 bit mode x64 mode is kinda buggy

As others have said and as I suspected earlier, it's probably about to be updated. I was just playing HL2 a few days ago and it was running fine. The unavailable issue only came up today as far as I'm aware. I wouldn't worry much just bad timing is all.

Try this. In the steam game list, right click Half Life 2 and select properties, then launch options. In that box type -window . See if it will load the game. If it does, go the graphic settings and select the proper screen resolution. Exit the game, go back to launch options and remove the -window

sorry if you have fixed the problem by now, but if the game is 100% loaded try running steam in offline mode and starting it.

1.disable lan/wireless
1.connect to steam
3.start in offline mode

hope it works if it isn't resolved already
