Alright, so basically, I just BARELY bought the game, I've never played it before..I've been playing CS: S and Garry's Mod for quite some time now, but I've never really played Half life 2. I bought it just about an hour ago...downloaded/installed, went to play... I waited almost a half hour, then I ended the non responsive HL2.exe process. Tried again, and again..nothing. Uninstalled the game, RE_INSTALLED THE GAME...same crap. It stalls right after the "64-bit mode active" or whatever thingy shows up...and it just sits there. Hard drive stops cranking shortly after, and it doesn't use any CPU usage..it just stagnates. I tried running the hl2.exe process in compatibility mode for XP SP2, same crap.
Is there anmy known fix for this? I don't want to lose 19 bucks, I really don't...

You might want to search this problem up on the steam forums, im pretty sure your not the only one with a problem like this. BTW , are other games working fine? Like CSS and stuff? It could possibly be due to a recent patch.

What version of ATI's catalyst drivers are you using with your HD3870 x2?

Yeah, exactly why I was curious, because my other games run perfect, I've never ever had an issue (Other than with this ATI card, it won't fold and play at the same time nicely..unlike every Nvidia card I've had)

Earlier today I decided to play some good old Half-Life 2 and I encountered the same problem as you. I tried firing it up just a second ago after seeing that someone else was having an issue and Steam prompts me with a message saying the game is unavailable right now. It shouldn't have anything to do with your card since I was playing HL2 just the other day. HL2 Ep 1 & 2 play fine though.

*EDIT* Now I feel dumb..so I guess STEAM saying it's not available, maybe there is a bug or something? I dunno, I guess that would have been critical info..sorry about that.

I got xp and it runs ok for me but alot of people are having trouble with steam apps in vista. I will never install it so I can't help you much. I did find a couple o solutions, one was;
- right click on the icon - select Run as Administrator - press allow the next is; go to C:\program files\steam right click on steam.exe and select properties. go to the compatibility tab. select "run this program in compatibility mode for:" and then set it to windows xp. do the same for "gameoverlayUI" I hope that they help you.

Why is it smoking?

Yep, HL2 is being spazztastic for me as well. Dunno if it matters or not but I'm running the Orange Box version with the FakeFactory Cinematic mod (v8.2). It worked fine about 8 hours ago, so I'm guessing it's an update issue.

If that doesn't help, it's a bit hard to narrow things down, but I'd start by (unfortunately) completely uninstalling the game and then reinstalling. On a side note, are you by any change using more then 2 RAM modules? It's sounds odd, but HL2 seems to have difficultly allocating system memory in some machines. I've only seen it happen a few times though.
