Here are my votes, whatever you choose from that list (for the most part) should be pretty good.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Team Fortress 2 (played this alot once COD4 started getting old)
Crysis
Bioshock
Crysis: Warhead

Depends on the type of game you like to play, for instance in relation to new games my 5 picks would be;

Red Alert 3 - RTS
Fallout 3 - RPG
COD:WaW - FPS
GTA IV - a mix of action/adventure
Portal - Puzzle

It all depends on your preferences!

Left 4 Dead. Fun and really replayable. you'll learn the meaning of teamwork and find out just how the poor characters in those zombie movies feel.

The Orange Box. 5 games in one, and excellent value. I can't keep away from Team Fortress 2, lol.

GTA IV. Come on. I haven't played it much yet but it looks awesome and apparently feels like a movie... it does have some glitches though as complained by some players on here.

Fallout 3. can be a bit difficult to get into but i promise you if you do you will love it. the story is excellent and it feels extremely atmospheric.

Bioshock. still stands as the best shooter i have played. i love the game so much - the story and the atmosphere... just awesome... Play this before you play Fallout 3 though.

all are available on Steam if that rocks your socks.

Games that get my honorable mention are:

Call of Duty - World at War
Call of Duty 4
Crysis
Crysis Warhead
Far Cry 2

to save you a bit of time and a bit of hassle, i would recommend getting the Valve Complete pack - $100 for every Valve game out ^^.

If you don't have WC3 and TFT...I'd say that's a good place to start.
