1. Then don't use AVI? Since it takes .mpg, I bet it takes .m2ts, .mts and .ts too since it's basically the same thing. Those can contain H.264 and VC-1, among other formats.
2. It would be much better if you used H.264 (x264)... and I don't mean H.264 via Premiere or Quicktime or something. That's what I was getting at.

Anyway, it would hardly be a marginal difference, because the quality is really, really bad.
