So I bought a couple games from someone here and I went to install Gears of War today but it failed. I am not sure if there is a scratch on the CD keeping it from reading effectively or whatever the deal is. I have the box with the product key so I'm legit but what can I do to get this thing installed? Do I need to contact MS and see if they'll send a replacement CD or do I just look for it online and DL it? If the later, what do I do about the key? Let be clear, I am NOT looking to do anything illegal here so please only recommend above board solutions. Thanks!

you can use a copy online and use your key, but if i were you, i'd call up microsoft and ask them for a replacement dvd. oh yeah, before you do anything, try installing it on another pc first just to rule out yours.

What exactly is going wrong? Is it not reading the disc at all or does the game not start after installing it? If it's the latter, Gears of War needs a patch to start, it broke for some reason in Jan this year. Download the latest patch, and install it. But, you have an Asus motherboard. Do you have the Asus EZFlash bios updater thing installed? If so you'll have to uninstall that first, because otherwise the patch opens that program. Epic have really put no effort into this game at all.

I get the installer, it goes through the 2 license agreements and begins loading. It gets to a particular file and hangs. After quite some time a window pops up stating something to the effect that it cannot read file such-and-such and to make sure I have access to it. I'll try it one more time and write down the specifics of the pop-up window and do a search on it to see if it was a chronic issue or not. If not, then I'll ring MS for a replacement copy.

And nope, no bios updater installed.

It may seem silly, but maybe you don't have enough disk space?
If it's the disc, just ask Microsoft for a replacement. They replaced all 4 of my FS2004 discs for free, no questions asked.

You can use a copy from a torrent site just to install it. When you get on Windows Live, just use your product ID. You should be good from there. You have to also download the TU3 update from the gears of war site, otherwise you won't even be able to boot the game. They will say you have a modified executable file. PM me if you have any more issues. I play that game every day.

oh yeah i forgot, if have a gamecrazy or some gameshops around, sometimes they'll buff out your disk for 2 dollars or so. as well as a kit available in wal-mart for 20 dollars.
