Default GTA IV lag at moments

Right now, I'm running a GTX 260 216SP with 700/1506/2400 and an e8500 @ 4.0 GHz (both stable).

For some reason, once in a while, GTA IV would all of a sudden get laggy during computational-intensive moments (lots of gunfire, physics when car hits someone, getting into a car, etc).

I know for a fact my overclocks are all stable (work perfectly fine in every other game, this is GTA IV exclusive).

Anyone have any ideas?

Yea, unfortunately, GTA IV likes more than just a dual-core processor. I own both a dual-core processor and GTA IV, and I have the same problems as you also.

I should also add that this is an on-off thing. Most of the time, it runs perfectly fine, but every so often (I'd say 1 in 20 sessions), it acts up like this.

I've had many, many 6-hour runs on GTA IV before without any problems.

i still stand by my answer, you need more cores or more memory.

Heres the prob. You have a badassed card, but during times where alot of things are moving and a bunch of s#its going on at once, the game gets choppy. Try turning down some of the eye candy in GTA4 or shut down some of the eye candy in windows. This will free up ram. It will also free up some gpu power. I have this problem sometimes even when playing UT3 and I'm running 2 9800gtx's in SLI. I think if you turn off some stuff you don't need in windows and turn down some settings in game, GTA4 will run like a champ. By the way, nice setup!!!!

Thanks for the help from all of you! I'll try freeing up some power first, if that doesn't help, I'll look into an i7 setup once my spare PC sells.

UPDATE: I've found the problem!

Unfortunately, it wasn't any of the suggestions here (but thanks still!), but it was my graphics card. It turns out that it kept underclocking itself to 400 MHz core because it was stuck in 2D mode, so I forced it to 3D mode 24/7 through rivatuner. The game works without a hitch now.

I actually get pretty good gameplay now! Very smooth framerates at 1920x1080 with all settings maxed out except view distance (hacked to run @ 55 instead of stock 29).

Definitely The e8500 runs well for what I need it for, but it starts lagging badly when I increase view distance past 65. I'm waiting for the 32nms to come out though before I go i7/i5.

On an unrelated note, it feels like the naming monkeys from nVidia have infiltrated Intel
