This is the very best way that I can answer this question: use this guide: Crysis Tweak Guide.

The results you get will totally depend on how much effort you put into experimentation and all that. But this guide helped me get the best that I can personally get without dropping the performance too much. I'm not getting anything super, ultra-special, but it's certainly a bit better than I would have gotten without the help of this excellent guide!

Oh, and one more thing: you'll see a link to something called the Natural Mod. It's not a mod in the sense that you can load it and unload it from the Mod menu. It's a mod that, if you install it, it's best experienced by starting a new game after ward. Otherwise, it just won't look the way it's actually supposed to. This mod also adds a System.cfg file which you can edit. So, you could edit it, play a bit, edit it, play a bit, edit it, play a bit, and so on until you find the best settings with the smallest loss in the eye candy that you hope to keep.

Also, regarding the Natural Mode again: it says it is supposed to greatly improve the appearance without a drop in performance, but I felt a drop in performance. It felt like 5-10 FPS or so. So, I had to modify the System.cfg file.

But definitely go through this guide, but for the love of time itself, please ignore the TweakGuides Tweaking Companion. I took one look at that thing, laughed and then deleted it. It's massive, and it is not specific to Crysis. I mean, he needs to have a system tweak for Crysis. After all, he must have the time to do it. lol I know I don't.

Anyway, that's my best answer for this. After all, everyone has different personal tastes, so customize it the way you see fit and see how it goes. And then repeat as often as necessary.
