ok im new to peltiers and thinking of using these....now i understand that one side gets very cold as the other gets very hot..now as people use these on their cpu's and cool the peltier with a water cooling system that can work out kinda expensive..because i dont have a WC system...now i was thinking what if i was to get a peltier...say the 226watt?..(ithink it is)..and use that to cool my cpu and use a Big Typhoon, lapped nicely with a nice powerful fan...would this be enough to keep the peliter fairly cool?

I think Tuchan and Burn have been fooling around with this, but Pinhead is by far the expert on peltiers. From what I've read, peltiers are most efficient at around 70% of their rated voltage, and so this will cut the wattage accordingly. Pinhead and Tuchan use 437W pelts along with watercooling, so I don't think air cooling a pelt is possible... yet.

By all means you can try, BUT it most likely won't work very well. The cooler the warm side of the module the cooler the cold side- and it almost works to a point of per degree in some cases. I run both the 226 watter and the 437 watter, still as usual experimenting (working on something to control input voltage) and even the 226 watter running at only 9 volts (can do 15 on the 226) still produces a lot of heat, surely too much for a TTBT. I might just give it a run and see what happens.
__________________At the end of the day- a very good quality and efficient water cooling rig is needed to move the heat generated by either a dual core or single core CPU plus the module heat, it adds up. Think about it, the CPU heat, say overclocked 150 watts plus the peltier of maybe at very least another 150 watts, 300 watts. I don't think a TTBT can cope with that. Imagine running the 437 watter at 20 volts?

Lately I've been looking at numbers and I'm not so sure. I guess the real question is what's your definition of "working"? What temps are you looking for? With a good watercooling setup and a 437w pelt on the right voltage you can easily get into the -20C idle temps and -10C load temps. You definately won't get that low on a good air cooler/peltier, but there have been some 226w pelts on air that get to 0C idle and 15C to 20C load. Would that be worth the extra power and heat? That wasn't normal air cooling, though. The entire case was optimized to instantly eradicate the heat from the HOT heatsink so there's no heat recirculation. And it was loud.
__________________Once I get a little extra cash I'm going to get a Tower112 or something like that and put my 437w on it. I'll have to get a variable PSU to test voltages, etc. The tower will be ducted for fresh air in from the front and hot air out the back, there will be NO heat getting into the case. I'll probably end up melting my ducts and starting a fire, but it'll be a fun experiment!

Hmm, I've seen alot of the el-cheapo 110watt pelts folting around on various sites and eBay. Think they would beable to reduce any temps with air cooling? I've never really even considered it till now after hearing the possiblity of using air with a peltier.
I wouldn't be looking for sub-zero temps either. LOL I'd be happy with 40 degrees ![]()

I tried it. It doesn't work. The TEC rapidly overpowers the Typhoon. I think those things need to be watercooled period.

Aircooling the peltier remains in the domain of the old 80W versions, which now will not cope with the cirrent CPU's.
