Default modded power supply :::pics:::

I was on here last week reading about peltiers and it inspired me to mod a power supply I had laying around. the power supply is a PowerKing ATX-PK400 specs are as follows...

+3.3v=28A +5v=30A +12v=25A DC out is rated at 400w

back when i was using it, it was a good power supply though the fan started to get a little loud and never really blew too much air anyway. So the first thing was to change out the fan with a Masscool 80mm 32cfm fan (no leds)

Next I removed all wires accept the 12v, ground & power on.

I then got about 20" of 8-awg power wire from some car audio stuff. I was all out of black so i used red for the + & -. I drilled out two holes in the board to fit the larger wire and commenced soldering.

Perhaps i didn't need 8 awg wire (i know i didn't) for this little power but it cost me all of nothing and I got to have a little fun.

If they did discharge, it wouldnt be the first time. the nerves are screwed up at the tip of my right index finger from one of those. I had one discharge through my finger and burn me. ever since then I get weird feelings at the tip, usually a burning feeling or just no feeling at all. Its such a small part that it doesn't affect me so i dont really care. just another war story.

Your caps look blown and this PSU may be dead. Is the brown stuff on top of the three capacitor died up electrolyte fluid? Or is it just glue?

It's glue when you blow a cap the top bulges or juse splits open. They put glue on it to keep the cap in place.

Glue <> capacitor fluid. If a cap is bulging or split open... IT IS DEFECTIVE. No amount of glue in the world would fix it. Why revive this old tread?
