Default TEC 80watt

wat temps you reckon you could get with an 80watt peltier??

and also if i did get the peltier would it be possible to

a) put thermal compund between the pelt and CPU? and would taht help?
b) just have air cooling to cool down the hot side?

REPS WILL BE AWARDED TO ANY GOOD REPLIES

Air cooling would only be good if you can manage the mounting hardware to accomodate the pelt...which is usually not the case with standard heatsinks.

An 80watt pelt has a delta T of 76 degrees C....when moving 80 watts of heat. You can expect to have temps in the 10-15 degreeC range with good cooling. Lower if you have great cooling.

Thermal paste between the cpu and pelt is must, and thermal paste must also be put on the hotside of the pelt between the heatsink and pelt.

You will also need a pelt power supply, and water proofing - foam pads, dielectric grease, etc. You do not want ANY of the cooled surfaces exposed to ambient air.

If DD doesn't ship there then refer to the thread Lando started:
http://www.overclock.net/water-cooling/7848-stores-buy-watercooling-gear.html

There's a handful of Aussie shops in there.

I dunno, while Xaiver's calculations are correct, that's under ideal circumstances, TECs are very inefficient, and even more so when air cooled, I'd bet your temps would be the same maybe even higher than if you were just air cooling the CPU.

I wouldn't really consider getting an 80 W Peltier for any modern CPU. I've got a 226 W Peltier on my A64 with the Maze 4-1 block from Danger Den and I'm still only around 15-20 C under full load (with 1.85 V at the CPU, but still...)

May as well reply to the original post as well...

a) It would be possible to put thermal compound between the two, but this form of mounting wouldn't be advisable. The normal method of mounting a Peltier involves sandwiching the Peltier between the heatsink and a separate plate of copper ("coldplate"). This is to help ensure even pressure is applied to the Peltier, as well as ensuring the heat from the CPU is distributed as evenly as possible to the Peltier.

b) It's definitly possible to air cool a Peltier, but again, probably not advisable for the wattage Peltier you'd need for a modern CPU. I would estimate that an 80 W Peltier is about the max you could effectively air cool, but again, an 80 W Peltier won't get you far with a modern CPU.
