whats the recommended thickness? i have a 1/2" plate right now, but its 50mm x 50mm and my new tec is 50x50

As long as your cold-plate is as big or bigger then the TEC its OK...I used a 1/2" thick plate for my 320W TEC and I like it better then the 1/4" thick one I'm using now...The temp's didn't spike up so fast...They say for sub-zero operation a 1/4" or a little thinner is best...I think I'm going to make a 3/8" thick cold-plate for this 437W and see how it does....

the 320 is 50x50, my cold plate is 50x50x1/4

Yeah that will work, The base of your CPU block should be 50x50mm to to cover the hot side completely....As long as they are the same size its OK, if you had a 62mm TEC with a 50x50mm cold-plate and water-block it wouldn't work out to well...
