Default 8 TEC Direct Die cooler

I think the only future for direct die TEC’s is to go with something link this. It has 8 50 TEC’s on the sides of the central sold shaft with something like this you’ll have no problem cooling 400 watts of heat load .. I actually think it’s a bit of and over kill probably 4 TEC’s would be fine.

Thanks Ira-k (the man that never sleeps) and Clielscape for the awesome pic

Yes it would weight alot

How would you dissipate that enormous amount of heat?

Look like it will be in the way of the heat pipes and cooling chipset.

Is that a solid copper core? If so, thermal resistance will be a huge factor.

A 2x2 TEC block parallel to the processor would perform better...

The more TEC's you have the lower the wattage you can run them at to cool the same load. TEC's are more effecient the lower the wattage. So this would use less electrictiy than 2 TEC's cooling the same load. Assuming their all using the same wattage TEC's

Well we should beable to workout the thermal ressistance of a 5cm square block of copper ( 4 TEC model) .... anyone good at maths?

This page should be handy.

Its the cost of a lump of good copper that put me off such and idea (and i know you will feel the same). Im much happier with the inline chiller ideas for now (though systems of this nature have crossed my mind before).

Also, surely with a cuboid you will have 5 sides available, so you could fit 5 peltiers on a cube if required?

While we are on fanciful ideas, how about instead of a large, heavy expensive, copper block you use heatpipes instead.

For example:

The other diagrams just shows some potential scaling to fit more peltiers in (largely ridiculous but i was having some fun with paint).

EDIT: er, this is clearly a terrible idea, im pretty sure hetapipes dont work like this...

Heatpipes move energy from a warm area to a cooler area. All of the drawings would work better if you removed that one TEC directly on base.

Also, why so 2D? The upper-right design may work with 4 TEC in a cross formation.

2D because I spent five minutes between lectures drawing it. As you say, if you could cram enough heatpipes in the base you could fit more peltiers on in a 3D manner.

My concern about heatpipes is that they have certain operational working temperatures so getting one end very cold might just stop the whole thing working.

EDit: just looked it up and ehatpipes can work at low tmeperatures, im just not sure how well and what type you'd need.
