This is something I noticed when looking in to phase change. I was always under the impression that Phase change was considerable more efficient that TEC cooling. Is totally true when comparing a phase change unit to a TEC running at Umax (max volts). However I was fully aware that as you lower the voltage a TEC becomes more efficient, as in it can move more heat in watts relative the wattage used to do so. I went down to a local Air con shop and got some numbers on Phase change units. There was a unit there that used 950watts of electricity to provide 3200watts of cooling. This is a ratio of 3.36 watts moved for every watt used. This compares to a TEC running at about 40 % of Umax at 26.85 (300k) ambient. Below 40% the TEC moves more heat per watt than the phase change unit does

Also, I am a bit confused... the unit uses 950w to move 3200w. How is that possible? It is doing more work than power consumed.

a pelt can move more energy than it uses... as much as 5 times the amount when undervolted.
it just moves energy, it doesnt really do anything with it.

Radeon X700 replaced by 8400GS, PC actually works flawlessly now. 1GB Xtreem died, took X-Fi with it. PSU's fault. - Ordered new RAM and PSU. PCP&C 1KW + 2GB OCZ 800Mhz up and running.

It's possible because its a pump ... its the same in water cooling or air cooling.. your 10watts water pump moves 200watts of heat from your CPU to your radiator to be cooled with a 3 watt fan which moves the heat from the water to the air .. the heat is in the water the pump just moves it from one place to another. So you can say in an air cooling system your cooling a 200watt load with 3watts of electricty it was a bigger unit than most PC's use it was about 11,000 BTU's .. they had much bigger ones in the shop too. |
