Just a thought I had; would a cold plate really be necessary when using a processor such as mine (AMD Phenom 9850)?
The reason this comes to mind is, most AMDs have the huge copper heat spreader. Isn't a cold plate exactly that? I've never run a TEC setup, but I was considering in and feal like being cheap lol.

Isn't the whole point of a TEC the cold plate?
I mean like, isn't that the main part in a TEC?

its not the TEC module, its kind of liek a spacer, keeps the cpu from changing temps to fast i beleive.

I would always use one. Correct me if in wrong but the cold plate is like a reservoir of coldness above the cpu which absorbs heat when the cpu loads

I know what the cold plate is for, what I'm wondering is if one is really needed when the Phenoms ALREADY has a huge copper block.
looks like this(i know it doesn't look like copper, I've sanded it down, the silver is just a thin finish):

All chips have an IHS. I know nothing about TEC, but if it is needed for regular processors, yours should be the same story.

Yeah I know all chips have IHS, but AMDs' are way thicker than Intels'.

If the TEC is larger than the CPU then YOU HAVE to use a heat spreader ..
A TEC is made up of heaps of little Peltier modules if the tec over hangs then CPU the modules not touching the CPU wont be removing any heat from the CPU so your performance will be drastically reduced ... Since the TEC is pretty much always bigger that the CPU a cold plate is used to transfer some of the CPU's heat to the outside modules for cooling. The cold plate is also needed cos the surface temp of the TEC is very uneven partly due to the gaps between the Peltier modules within the TEC The same applies to the hot side. The TEC must be covered by the water block or a heat spreader otherwise the modules will burn out

damn it just beat me to it ultra
but yea if the TEC is bigger than your CPU its a waste and all the good ones are bigger than cpus and a coldplate kinda helps you hone the coolness of a TEC on to the cpu
