Since you have a quad, the greater cost in the long run will be your electric bill. You'll need a 437w TEC for a quad, that's gonna run your bill up a noticeable amount.

Well there are two paths you can take. The water chiller path expensive and must be custom made but thermally and electrically more efficient. Or, direct die. Direct die now suffers because TECs arn't made in a high enough wattage to cool Core i7s and such.

Anyway who cares how much it uses if you want to go sub ambient it's gonna cost you in electricity no matter what you do.

usually a PSU can cost around... 100-120 iirc... not 100% sure but a ballpark figure... the TEC itself costs 20-40 depending on where you get it, insulation can be scavanged from anything that's packaged in closed-cell foam, add some kneadable eraser/liquid electrical tape and dielectric grease/ vaseline... shouldnt cost too much and you may already have some of it.

I honestly wouldn't bother using a 437W TEC on a quad, not if your looking for low temp's. I can barely keep dual cores with a decent OC at a little above 0C with one at load.
The electric where I'm at runs around $30 a month for 24/7 with a 437W. Even if you already have WC'ing it would need to be a heavy duty set-up to handle the heat and by the time you buy all the stuff to set one up you could almost get a single stage phase that would give you a lot better temp's and a lot better OC'ing. If your just wanting to do some suicides or a little benching you can get a DICE/Ln2 pot for around a $100 and get some good runs fairly cheaply, well with dry ice its cheap anyway.

Although you may not get to 0 load temps from say 50c like you used too you can get from 80c to 30c ... which is still worth it in my book I personally think Dice/Ln2 is pointless. sure you can get super low temps and a great overclock but who cares you can't use that overclock. for more than a few minutes

..It's just for suicides of course. But a lot of guys like it for just that reason and just run on a HSF or WC'ing for 24/7.It really just depends on what he's looking for, going from WC'ing to really good direct die TEC is about like going from a HSF to WC'ing except its a lot more expensive and you have to pay for the electric every month to. If his WC'ing is already set up well for a big heat load getting a 437W block and a 437W TEC and PSU might make more sense if he only wants to spend $3-400 more on it. But if he has to redo his WC'ing loop and buy all that I'd just get a single stage phase and load at a -30C or so. It wouldn't cost any-more to buy, the electric bill would be about the same and he could really push his OC then. I've used them all and TEC is fun but it's really not that good for pushing OC'es.
