I'd love to have a steel lapping plate, but I'm just to cheap to spend a couple of hundred dollars on one,it would sure be nice to have one though.

I went down my local glaziers who also did shop fronts and explained exactly what I wanted and why, he said " Hang on a mo" and appeared 5 minutes later with a piece of plate glass he had cut off a broken shop window he said " that'll do yer" and declined any payment....

Oh yeah window type glass will work to. That nice thick 1/2"-1" plate glass just makes it a lot easier and faster to get a good lap with, it's smoother, without as many irregularities and it has almost 0 flex to it, if you ever get a chance to snag a piece grab it.

I file mine down Chiel, I use a 14" mill file. If you don't think you can keep it flat by hand just lay the file on a table, then line 2 corners of the IHS up about in the middle of the file, diagonally. Work it up and down a dozen times or so then flip it around to the other two corners, just keep spinning it around as you go, that will pretty well cover the whole IHS.
I lay my file down flat every now and then like that and check that I'm keeping it flat. It's still slow going, but it's a lot faster then sandpaper, just get it about how ever far you want to take it and lap it then. Keep a steady pressure in the middle of your work piece so you wont drag your leading and trailing edges. Keep your file knocked out or the copper will ball up in it and scratch your IHS, keep straight edging it as you go along.
