Default Noise, size, etc of phase change

Soooo....I've been looking at phase change a bit and was thinking of making one. However, I have a few questions.
Does it require a high level of expertise to make one?
Are they generally very loud?
Do they consume a lot of power?
And will it really benefit me for daytoday use...will voltage still kill chips even at extremely low temperatures?

1) Yes, talk to an expert builder like Nol about having one built.

2) Depending on the compressor an fan, it could surpass 40dB.

3) Yup, but I'm not sure exactly how much.

4) Phase isn't usually used 24/7 because its loud, and no one needs to run a 5ghz all the time. Usually people use it for benching. And yes, even at super-low temps, super-high voltages will kill your chip - it just takes longer than at normal temperatures.

Ah thx sounds like phase isnt for me....I like a quiet computer.

If i get the urge to do some hardcore benching, I'll get some dice i guess.

1) I agree
2) somewhat agree but remember most of the noise is coming from the fans. Once the guy is up and running unless its a huge compressor you wont hear it.
3) your looking at about the same draw as a wall A/C unit. The initial startup will draw the most power then after that it levels off.
4) Actually dryice/LN2 are used mainlyf or benching. Phase if its like a cascade or something with multiple compressors is more of a benching creature. However a single stage phase unit is usually geared toward 24/7 usage. They handle the 24/7 usage very well and as long as you keep a respectable oc your not gonna hurt anything.

I don't know much other than looking at the Phase Change coolers but it looks alot like a smaller refrigerator compressor with the Freon being fed directly onto the processor, then the freon boils and gets sent back to the condenser and then goes back into the compressor and sent back to the processor again. So My Question is could you go to wal mart and buy a college fridge for less than a hundred dollars and mod the guts to send the freon to the processor instead of the coil?

No, you need a compressor that can run for extended periods of time.

Before this turns into another out-of-control thread, just search for fridge and you will find literally hundreds of threads explaining how it won't work. However, people have successfully modified window A/C units to help cool an air-cooled rig. These units are made for 24/7 use. Also, they tend to be cheaper than the college fridges (especially now that it's winter, if you can find one in a store).

Units could be made to be practically silent, however the way many people build units, by pushing the components to the lowest temperature will not give you this. Instead tuning properly and simply using the components within their specifications, and still giving you plenty good subzero temperatures will help much more.
These systems can also be much lower power if they weren't again being pushed. A comfortably tuned compressor can purrr along at low power specifications, sure a bit more then air cooling, but not that huge of a hit.
And really, although no one really needs 5ghz on a system like these for all the time, it can be nice for the gamers or autocadder's and 3d designer group.

Fridge compressors can run all the time. That is not the issue. A fridge is simply not tuned for a high load at a low temperature. And the compressors are often times fairly small in power. There is no need for a larger compressor to cool food where the only heat load is pasta and insulation losses when people open the door.
