How cheap and quiet can a SS be?

I have first been planning WC, then added plans for a TEC... but now I am thinking of a cheap SS. I don't need -100 degree temps, I just want to keep a Phenom and later a Phenom II below zero. Since my plans for a TEC included an Arctic Web and a $150 600W aux psu as well as the $200 water cooling loop I began to look at phase, and recently a SS was suggested by a forum member.
I want low noise and low cost. I know the only way to get an affordable phase system is to build one. I can cut and braze the copper pipes but that is about it. I don't have any previous experience with such systems but I have been reading up on guides on how to do it. My primary question is what would it cost to build a small SS and how quiet could I make such a system (I know the compressor will be the loudest component).

personaly you are probaly better off contacting a builder. unless you are going to turn this int oa big hobby or a job it is alot of work and expence. you can always send a pm to littledevil or gomeler on xs forums. or you can contact nol if your able to get ahold of him.
although asuming you would want to take this up as a hobby the first step woudl be geting epa certified(assuming you live in the us, if you dont idk what the laws are for you) http://www.epatest.com/608/ next would be taking hvac classes and reading stickies on xtremesystems phase section. http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...splay.php?f=80 and it never hurts to have a good refferance to look to. http://www.amazon.com/Modern-Refrige.../dp/1590702808 Quote:

I think I will have one built or buy a premade one from a builder. I think should be able to tune it if I need to.
I also know a good compressor will cost about $200 or a bit more if it is moderately quiet. My only other concern is what fans I will need to cool the condenser and how loud they will be. To get a decent phase system under 30dBA would be a dream come true, but I don't think that is reasonable. I am really thinking phase isn't the right route for me. They're big, loud, and suck power like a blonde.

I don't know how much they usually run, but frozencpu.com has one on their site for $800.

There are things you can do to make them run quieter also. However I am nost sure if messing with phase is gonna be in your game if your too terribly worried about any of those concerns to be honest.

I don't go to LAN parties so size is not a horrible concern. The power is not too bad since I will not be running this like a folding rig or anything (at least that is not currently planned). The noise is more of an annoyance. Right now I am running a few Scythe Ultra Kazes and they are obnoxiously loud (45+ dBA spec.). I would guess my entire rig is close to 50+ dBA with all fans maxed out. I don't think that would be too hard to improve on.

also if noise is your only concern for a phase unit you can always use a water cooled condensor. except you now have a cooling loop for your phase unit. but the good thing is you'll see lower cpu temps. assuming you use a reasonable condensor. 15plate liquid to liquid or beter would probaly be adaquit. if you wanted to go 30 or even 50 plate you would see some rely good temps. buy 2 mcr220's with 40-60cfm fans you have nearly a dead silient unit with beter temps then with a air cooled condensor. its jsut you have an extra $100-200 added onto your unit. its a just a thought. alitle overkill but if silience is what your after that'll do it. you just have a 35db low hz tone from your compressor, or a high pitch tone if you use a rotary compressor. either way.
