get a 5400 this is what the ps3 OEM is.
as mentioned you can put a 7200 in but the performance is not increased, which i believe is restricted by the PS3 itself anyway, useless lol.

I read some numbers that indicated that a 7200rpm drive does increase performance, but only by a stupidly small amount - like 2 secs quicker booting, 0.5 secs quicker loading saves. So the performance increase is marginal considering the cost difference, stick with 5400 unless you have money to burn

this is a really good idea and i'm definitely going to do this to my 80gb model. However, I was wondering how big I can go with this - is 500gb possible? Also, how easy is it to copy all my stuff to external hard drive and then replace it onto the larger drive? Isn't paid-for downloaded content protected or something against copying?

cheers buddy, thanks for showing how easy this is to do!

Could i just buy the 1Tb drive put it in an external enclosure and plug it into my ps3 threw usb, WILL IT WORK?

What do i need to do to make it work?
Yes, you can - it should work out of the box.

I plugged in a 320gb western digital passport and it worked fine.

I think the biggest I have heard is 500 but I don't think there is a size limit, as long as the drive is 2.5"

The PS3 has a very useful backup feature, just hook up an external drive (formatted to fat32) and start the backup. It will back up all your demos and downloaded content and saved games. Then once you put the new HDD in and format it, just do a restore from the external HDD and everything should look just like it did before, but with a few extra GBs

OH it just jumped to 49
