I'm 90% sure that PS3 run similar to a router. The actual OS is stored in NVRam and loaded into memory on boot. Changing the HDD should have no effect what-so-ever on the operation of the PS3.

nope - the OS remains in-tacked after format. Even the firmware version will remain the same.

All other data like Web browser favorites, Folding@Home work, ect will be lost.

Is it posible to go for a faster RPM HDD? Any consequences if you don't stick to 5400RPM besides noise and vibration?

I read it's not the rpm, but the power draw in amps that you should watch, and incidently the faster spinning drives draw more. But I've also seen tuts where they put in a 7200 with no issues. I haven't seen any reports of 7200 upgrades not working though

I just picked up a 40GB PS3 and a 320GB HDD. This procedure is even easier than it looks in the pictures.

Was it 7200 or 5200 rpm? Did the PS3 Recognize all 320 GB? Did it cap at a lower GB? Any performance gains? Let us know

Not sure about the rest of you guys but I was going through the settings after formatting and there was an option to update the PS3 software. I clicked it and there was a new version that took a while to download and install. That's about all I did after the swap. Oh and I downloaded F@H of course.
Whats the largest HDD you can put in there? Any performance drops form having a much larger HDD?

Whats F@H?
