PS3 has its OS on its own storage device. Think flash chip. Once you insert your own hard drive, it'll format it and it'll run like normal. Recently I had a friend who needed to replace his hard drive and it asked for a USB stick with the latest update on it for some reason - I never had to do that with mine, but apparently its necessary. A USB stick or a PSP.

I just told you - the PS3 has the OS already stored in its eternal memory.

I just upgraded my PS3 hard drive to a 160GB HDD. Very easy process. Backed up all my videos and photos and saves etc to external HDD before doing so. However when I formatted the new HDD in my PS3. Everything on my ps3 (apart from the backed up files) is exactly how it was. It still has the latest OS version (2.52) and all my network settings and log-ins etc are still how they were. I was epecting the OS to be the early version pre-installed when I bought my PS3 and everything else to be at default. Is this normal? I was expecting to have to reconfigure EVERYTHING from scratch. As you do when you usually swap a new HDD on your pc. How odd
