Have you updated the software? I know when I bought my PS3 near the end of July, it had v1.60. First hook it up to something that will display the image, update it, then try the power button trick for your monitor.

You also said you needed a monitor with HDCP. I don't think the HDMI DVI cable will work for your non-HDCP monitor.

im actually planning on doing this, i have my 24 inch 1920x1200 monitor

Something i was wondering about though, will the ps3 know its 1920x1200 and adjust like a PC will or will it be sending a 1080p signal? so will the tops and bottom get cut off, will it stretch it, or what

so tempting to buy one :/

The signal is going to stay at 1080p, so if your monitor isn't that aspect ratio you should either get stretching or bars, can't say which. Try turning your desktop to 1080p res and see how it looks.

That's cuz they aren't cheap. You should be looking at around $50+ for a 2 port switch, even more for a nice one.

Most of the cheap ones only output 1680 x 1050 resolution don't they? I have yet to find a cheap one that outputs a true 1920 x 1080 or 1920 x 1200 resolution.
