Default The PS3 Myth

I keep hearing it sucks more power out than a fridge would. I expect this to be false, but to you 24/7 folders, would you say it's true? What was the difference in your electrical bill at the end of the month?

Also... I loved to fold on my PS3, but wouldn't staying on 24/7 somewhat damage it? I mean it's not like it's going to die from heat, but... Would you be worried about doing so?

According to Stanford, they say the PS3 uses an average of 200w when folding.

Quote:
What is the power consumption of the PS3 running the FAH client? Is it safe to run the PS3 24X7?

We expect the PS3 to use about 200W while running Folding@Home. We have several PS3's running in our lab, running Folding@Home 24/7 and have had good results so far.
http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandeg...g/FAQ-PS3.html

The PS3 was also tested in extreme conditions. Read here, http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/15/e...ise-from-sony/

I don't know about power consumption but it certainly gets fairly hot.

It can't be worst than a quad core folding box. I'm guessing that any console currently doesn't go much higher than 350 W peak.

PS3 probably about 200w on the average. It's going to be around XBOX360, which is like 175w I believe.

BUT, you'll definitely want/need an LCD with HDMI or component to play the darn thing without it looking like PS2. Tack on an additional 50-100w extra for any 32" LCD tv or above, compared to a stanard CRT style TV.

EDIT:
I think I hit it almost on the head: http://www.hardcoreware.net/reviews/review-356-2.htm

No wonder why the Wii sucks :P

P.S. My 40Gig PS3 new edition runs as cool as my 3600+ machine if that makes any sense. Maybe even cooler (~35C) ?

Yeah, but you wouldn't leave the TV on 24/7. We're talking about folding.

Gotcha.
Well, the answer is 190'ish watts. About the same as a high-end quad.
