Default which ps2s can be fixed?

has anyone compiled a list of which ps2's can be fixed when they get the DRE problem? I know I had a newer version that I couldn't fix that only played ps1 games. Now a co-worker wants me to fix hers and said she bought it new 3 years ago so I figure its old enough that I can adjust the cogs.

Also, unrelated to this section, but my brother received an Xbox360 as a gift from his S/O and it got the red ring of death recently... I don't know about the warranty as we don't have a box for it, just the actual console. Is there anyway to contact Microsoft and get them to replace or fix it for a fee?

What is an S/O?

Anyways, for red ring of death you have 3 years after original purchase on it and one year for anything else.

Just call 1-800-4MYXBOX and ask for them to send you an RMA box.

I know the fat ps3s have cog wheels that you adjust in order for the system to read media again from disk read error. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I haven't had any problems with my slim yet, so I can't speak to improving it's reading performance.

S/O = significant other, maybe.
