Default Is It Possible?

This is boggling my mind. This is my setup, and I'm wondering if I'll be able to get sound on my PS3->

I'd be using a HDMI to DVI cable with the PS3 however a PS3 only has optical outputs and my sound system only has analog inputs. Any ideas? Would I have to pick up a new stereo system such as this with a digital input for it to work? As it stands right now, I use the S/PDIF cable to go from my tower to the receiver, I'd assume it'd work the same with that system?

Speakers from this system would work with a new receiver amirite?

Also, HDMI from PS3/PC would go to receiver, then use the HDMI out to the monitor?

This is what I did before I got a TV.

Connect the PS3 to the monitor by a HDMI -> DVI cable.
Either buy a sound card that has SPDIF In if you want surround sound or....
If you don't want to buy a soundcard and don't care about surround sound, you can buy a converter for the PS3's normal AV (red/white wires) to coaxal speakers.

I can use the red/white wires on the AV cables for sound while using the HDMI? If so I can just plug those right into my 5.1 set reciever.

i have tried setting my sound card up to process the optical output from the ps3 and output it as 5.1 but i didnt have any luck lol.

at the moment i have my ps3 running to my monitor HDMI>DVI.
then i have plugged the av cable in and plugged the phono cables (red and white) into the back of my sub(the front speakers). and eureka i have sound coming from my front set of speakers.

not the best set up i might add but it will put you on in the meantime until you come up with some other solution.

EDIT: just remember to go into settings on your ps3 and change the audio output from HDMI to AV

Yeah, you can plug both the AV and HDMI into the PS3 at the same time. If you had two different screens with the right connections, this would allow you to see the same thing twice, lol (although one would be lower quality).

So yeah, just take the red and white sound cables and plug them into your sound system!

Edit: Hmmm, or maybe you couldn't see it twice. I don't have a PS3, lol. Apparently you actually have to mess with the sound settings? Oh well, it will still work anyway.
