From what I can tell this cannot be done unless the files are converted. So does anyone know out of all the software that makes the conversion from a MKV or AVI file to something the PS3 supports that is nice and free?

no - there are free options to converting MKV into normal avi.
.mkv files are like boxes. You can store multiple video files and audio files in them, along with subtitles. All you need is the mkv muxer to "unpack" the box into seperate files. I've done over 200 files before, it took awhile but its easy. Look around matroska.org for the muxer.

Super(c) is something I used to have, but uninstalled due to the program not launching correctly... So I am downloading the latest Super and crossing my fingers that it works.

The other issue I have is this.... if I use Super to convert the video it doesn't tell me what the bitrate, frames/sec., or other video properties are. This is crucial in knowing what I should choose as my output.

Try it out, then see if it works. Trial and error ftw.
