Default My YLOD experiance/guide

I'm gonna put this in a step-by-step way. Answer some questions at the bottom

Day 1: Got the YLOD, game stuck inside, late at night so I just went to bed

Day 2: Went to the Playstation website, PS3 was out of warrenty, paid $150 (charged after shipped to you) and gave them some info, they send an e-mail when ur return request is accepted.

2 hours later: Got my e-mail said they were sending a box for me to ship it in, and other Legal mumbo-jumbo. Note: The e-mail has a information card on it and tells you to print it out, you don't need to. They give you a more modern one with the box.

Day 4: Got my box, with an information card and other stuff inside, FREE 2 day shipping from Texas to P.A 3 ways to me, to them, to me. UPS. Sent it to them

Day 9: Its Back! The case looks new, new serial # of course, and the game that was stuck inside is in a 'lil cd case. I think the $150 paid for the shipping alone. If you inlude shipping the actual process took them 1 day.

*Days were in buisiness days, I think it was 11 including sat. sun.*
I had these questions when it happened to me, so I'll answer them.

What is the YLOD?
It means "Yellow Light of Death", you hit the red button and it goes green then yellow then turns off. Its hardware malfunction, not overheating.

What systems can it happen too?
RapidFireGT says 20, 40, 60, and 80 Gb, I'll believe him

Can I get my lost information some-how some-way?
NO, the Hard Drive is propietary, if it already wasn't backed-up, your screwed.

Do I get the same size hard-drive back? Or a newer one?
You get the same size, Since you send the hard-drive with it Im guessing they use the same one.

What do I have to send to them?
Just the console itself and the information card with the box, they said if you send any cables or controllers ext. you may not get them back

How sturdy/protected is the box?
Pretty good, you put the console in a anti-static sleeve, then put it in this crazy foam cage that surrounds the whole thing. Also it comes with some box-tape to put on that keeps it nice and shut and a new shipping label.

Do I keep my online info?
Yes, trophies and online downloads can be retained. When you sign up for PSN hit "Use existing account"

How much does it cost to get repair?
$150 unless its in-warrenty, I think almost all by now are out of warrenty.

Do I get my game back that's stuck inside?
Yes. and don't think your getting a shiney new one though, I stilled had my sharpied on CoD4

Can the replacement system get the YLOD?
Yes, but since Ps3 hardly gets it anyway, you would have to have the worst luck.

Is the Firmware up-to-date?
No, this is the only complaint I have to blame Sony, it was 2.60 which was the last *major* update, but I had to update to 2.76, which takes my ADSL awhile.

If anyone one OCN has some more questions I'll answer.

To the best Sony's knowledge, only the Original 20Gb and 60Gb can get it.

Can the replacement system get the YLOD?
I've read that it can not, but Sony didn't tell me anything so thats not 100%
.
Those two statements are incorrect. There have been reports of the YLOD on both the 40GB models and the 80GB models. Check the official Playstation 3 forums, they have a huge thread there with hundreds of YLOD reports.

Yes, the replacement system CAN get the YLOD. It has happened to me personally.

false
you can remove the hard drive and either plug it into an enclosure, another PS3, or directly to your computer and back everything up.

I've got to ask - why didn't you sign up for the continuous play thing and get a free replacement?

Are you sure about that? When it happened to me, I had heard that the hard drive's format was un-readable by Windows and you would be forced to reformat it to hook it up to a computer?

Then your hard drive must have been busto.
I've connected my hard drive to my computer before.
I've also have taken my cousin's PS3's hard drive, inserted it into mine, and backed up his saves to a memory stick. It didn't ask me for a reformat.

Okay you may have gotten lucky with putting it in your friends PS3, but its impossible to put it on a comp... Its proprietary, unless your a veteren reverse engineer (not) you couldn't do it.

The hdd is not proprietary, it is simply a laptop hdd. The files may have a filestructure that a pc will not recognize but there is nothing proprietary about the hdd itself.

LOL - Yes I am a veteran reverse engineer!!

Every time I have upgraded or switched hdds it has asked me to reformat so I dont believe that switching hdds can be done outside of reformatting.
