I'm pretty sure the compression in the video, and the way the video looks in the shot you snapped is because of YouTube.

Also, there is no way for me to capture a progressive output when the only source I can use is 480i from composite cables.

The video looks fairly good to me if the HD is clicked on YouTube.

Also, the MGS4 clip isn't converted to AVI. It's an MPEG, and I can't deinterlace that.

Also, letting you know, I'm using a DVC170. It's nowhere near as good as the other Dazzle devices.

Primarily because of blending. Quality will improve if the blending is gone.

Yes, there is. Like I said, it's not interlaced, but telecined. I didn't say capture, I said "get", meaning you can process it to get progressive video without deinterlacing.

I only see HQ? That screenshot is from the HQ ver.

You said you converted to AVI before going to VirtualDub, and yes -- you can.

So what? It has a lot more potential than this, you just refuse to believe it (or listen to me). I'm telling you this based on what I'm seeing here. I had no idea there was such a thing as a Dazzle, let alone a whole series of them.

If you would have read, I said on the MGS4 clip it was not converted like I originally thought I had done.

Show me a video on YouTube of a capture from a DVC170 looking how you're saying it's capable of looking then.

I've tried deinterlacing the video and it doesn't open MPEGs in VirtualDub, and I have AVISynth installed.

Explain to me how I'm capturing a source of 480i which is interlaced and you're telling me it's not interlaced. That makes no sense to me at all.

I was saying that you said it *was* before, ergo I was explaining my original response.

I will, if you post a capture.

You need a plugin to open MPEGs in VirtualDub, and just having AviSynth installed doesn't do anything. It's a scripting language. I was saying you can do it <using> AviSynth.

It makes no sense because you didn't click the "3:2 pattern" link I posted. I said it was most likely just telecined, not interlaced. Telecining looks like interlacing, but the big difference is that in interlaced content, every frame contains two fields from different points in time, while in telecined content, there are frames which contain duplicate fields whose purpose is to increase the framerate & frame count, but the unique content is only 24 FPS progressive. By reversing the telecine process you get progressive video.

Oversimplified TL;DR: Telecined video, like your MGS4 capture, is actually progressive video in disguise (for compatibility reasons with interlaced CRT TVs).

I used a tutorial to create another capture and used Sony Vegas to deinterlace it as well as some improvements.

I'll upload it whenever it's finished to compare the difference.

Saint's Row is more Arcade like.

Here's another video with tweaked settings.

YouTube - Fight Night Round 4 Demo - PS3 Capture Test Dazzle 170

For some reason I can't get it to display the HQ setting. I must have done something wrong, but it looks improved if you view the video in the actual YouTube page.

Last video I'm messing with for the night.

Did the same as the last Fight Night video and comparing it to my old MGS4 clip which is this exact clip only improved, I'd say it's a better improvement.

I'm getting there

Clicking the link to view it at YouTube.com is the best bet, as it's the higher resolution and not a smaller window embed. I wish we had embeds on OCN that were larger.

It's basically captured in Pinnacle Studio as MPEG4, imported into Sony Vegas, changed to 800x416, deinterlaced blend mode, and used Sony Brightness/Contrast filters, and Sony Sharpen filters and messed with the settings to get the best results.

Rainbowing might be there, but I am really happy with the results now, and compared to the original, it's a load of difference.

You captured it in a lossy format with, presumably, a low bitrate (since you didn't use MPEG-2 on this one). I assume you have control over the format. If you don't and you just re-encoded it, then that's even worse. Strike #1.
You used blend deinterlacing, which I already said is the worst thing you could do. Strike #2.
You deinterlaced. It's not interlaced, but telecined! You need to do IVTC. Strike #3.

You're out!

Other mistakes you made are using filters to get the "best results", which are not in fact the best results because you're changing the video without improving quality. You might as well use some program like 3dsmax or Maya to render it instead of capturing, because it would look better for you, but it won't be the game. You also used a commercial solution to process it, which is the biggest mistake anyone can make with video. It might not be the case in other fields, but when it comes to modern video processing, open source is best.

Since you don't seem to be planning to listen, I'm out of here :/
