Default PS3 Out of Warrant Service

I'm just curious since I thinking of buying a friend's PS3. His PS3 is the BC compatible 60GB model. I think it is already out of warranty since its a release PS3, so what if it gets YLOD or the BDROM doesn't read anymore? What should I do? Not really familiar about the warranty and service support of Sony when it comes to the Playstation since my PS2 didn't get any errors.

If I remember correctly, it's about $150 to fix a PS3 60GB if the BD-ROM goes out.

It's only $50 if it's a YLOD (Which is just a Firmware repair)

I think that's about right as well.

I think Enterprise just went through this whole procedure, so maybe he will shed some light on the situation for you.

My bluray went out and cost me $150 to fix. But they did throw in resistance and resistance 2 to soften the blow.

Nice, I haven't had to RMA a PS3 even though I have an original 60GB.

So you just RMA it right away? Without the receipt or something if its out of warranty? So it's safe to buy a second hand PS3? and I'm from Asia btw, not from UK.

I just got my PlayStation 3 back from RMA and they replaced the Blu-Ray player. It was also out of warranty. Didn't cost me a thing. Not even shipping.

So , it just depends on in which country you live in and what problems you have etc.

It should be just fine.

No matter where you go, you want to RMA your PS3 as long as it has the service tags on it (IE numbers on the bottom) then they'll fix it for you.

No.

Any time you have to send it in to Sony, it's going to cost $150 to be repaired, regardless of the problem.

I've had 2 instances of YLOD, and 1 instance of the BDROM becoming misaligned.

First PS3 YLOD: $150 to fix (one month out of warranty, purchased 3 days late to qualify for extended warranty [only for first some-many batches of launch PS3s])

Second PS3 BDROM failure: Free, happened within 90-day warranty for refurbished models from Sony

Third PS3 YLOD: Free & out of warranty, only because the phone operator was confused about the situation, or he/she was feeling feeling compassionate.

If I remember correctly, thats about how it went.

Bottom-line, any repair is supposed to cost you $150, but it all really depends on what tech support rep you talk to. Some are very kind and will grant you a free-repair even if it's out of warranty, but most of them will just tell you that you will have to pay $150.

*EDIT*: By the way, the YLOD is not at all just a firmware issue. It's hardware failure (usually due to solder joints losing contact with the motherboard, but can all occur from other issues such as a failed power supply).
