Default PS3 Demos Blurry?

I just picked up a PS3 (mainly for the Blu-ray player) and I decided to try out some demos from the Playstation store. I tried Fight Night Round 4, Fifa 10, and Dirt 2. All of them look HORRIBLE, bad textures, jagged edges, and unsightly blurring.

I'm running on my Dell 2709W, with 1080p in the PS3 settings. Is it just the demos that are downscaled to 720p, or are PS3 graphics just that crappy compared to PC ones that I'm used to?

Many demos run at 720p (it makes the overall file size smaller to download).

Someone doesn't know much about consoles
Almost no console games are 1080p. Most console games are only 720p and lower. When you set 1080p, it'll either upscale or outright stretch the picture depending on what the developer set.

You are correct. I've never been much a fan of consoles and this certainly doesn't help their case. At least I've secured myself a decent Blu-ray player, which was the primary purpose as mentioned. Not only that, but it gives me a reason to keep investing in PC hardware.

I guess I'll rent a couple games to see if I can tolerate the quality before buying. The only title I'm really interested in is GT5 and it appears as though it's 1080p, so I guess it really won't affect me.

I guess when you get used to a resolution like 1920x1200 you get used to it and when you see the lower end 720p stuff it looks meh.

I highly suggest Uncharted 2 which comes out on Tuesday publicly.

I think it's also partly a PC monitor running a non-native resolution. You're 6-10' away from a large HDTV so it's not as noticeable.

I'll check out the local pre-owned rack and get through Uncharted before moving on to the sequel. Heck, even Yahtzee said it was decent.

"Upscale" and "stretch" are almost always EXACTLY the same -- and in the few cases they aren't, there is extremely little difference - so little that even when comparing side by side, it is difficult to tell for the experienced eye.

Well actually there has been said difference, enough that Sony has 2 different rendering things included in their SDK supposedly. For one thing, more jaggies appear in the stretch or something. Also performance. The upscaling method supposedly takes processing power and the "stretch" method simply pulls the picture bigger.

There is only a few games that are full 1080P. Most are 720P but for then being bluury; I have never noticed it. I will have to pull one of the demos and check later.
