Default HD 5850 or PS3?

So my birthday was 2 weeks ago and I still haven't decided what to do with the ~$330 I got.

I'm thinking of getting either an HD 5850, since I wouldn't need to upgrade my PSU, or a PS3.

The 5850 is $315 shipped and the PS3 is $330 in store, so its very close.

The one thing I know for certain is that the 5850 is going to be getting a price drop long before the PS3 does, so if I get a PS3 now and a 5850 later I'll probably be saving money.

I'm not even sure I want either one right now though. Part of the reason it's taken me 2 weeks to decide is that I'm pretty happy where I'm at now. I have a 360, so my console needs are somewhat satisfied, and my 4870 is certainly no slouch when it comes to gaming.

My 4870 can handle pretty much anything I throw at it, which is usually just CoD4, TF2 or Fallout 3/Oblivion. But I'm not sure about the near future, I would like to continue running all of my games on high at 1920x1200 with AA but if my 4870 can handle that there really isn't any point in spending $300 on a video card that will likely be $150 before its even needed.

  • Are there any good games coming out soon that will cripple my 4870? (Cripple = can't play at 1920x1200, ~60fps on high)

As I said before I already have a 360, but the PS3 has blu-ray and some interesting exclusives. I don't really like the controller but if the gaming experience is good enough I'd be willing to live with the discomfort It doesn't work with VGA though so I would have to unplug my monitor every time I want to use it, or stick the PS3 in the living room(good thing it has wireless), and I'm unsure about the audio when using hdmi.

  • Are the exclusive titles enough to justify a $330 price tag when I already have a 360?
  • If I'm using HDMI can I still plug my speakers in using a 3.5mm jack?
  • How much better is 1080p blu-ray over 720p?
  • Can the PS3 Slim fold?

So basically I'm going to leave it up to OCN. Somebody please come up with a good reason for me to get either one!

5850. You have a good pc, why waste money on an overpriced console?

For sure get a 5850, im still an avid console gamer (I play 360 too), but Id still take PC parts over a console. Unless you really need a PS3 as it does have some neat features.

Get the 5850, sell your 4870, and then buy a Blu-Ray drive and possibly another HDD for RAID-0.

5850, you don't need a PS3. Sell your 360 and get a PS3 if you want one.

Sell 4870 -> Blu-Ray Drive

Edit: Lol, right above me

Save it for now. Don't just spend it because you have it. Something will come along and you'll be glad you have it. Maybe go to Mardi Gras next year?

Why not buy a 4870 on the cheap, do crossfire, get better performance than a 5850, and buy a PS3 used or refurbished?
