Default What HDD for my PlayStation 3 ?

Ok , I'm looking for a good HDD for my PlayStation 3. It only has to be either 500GB or 1TB and fast. So , I'm asking you experts which one.

The costs don't really matter , although 1TB HDD's can get very expensive in 2,5" size. Anyway , what would you guys advise me to get ? I'm looking for brands , speeds and caches etc.

Thanks.

The only HDDs I've seen offered in 1Tb are the Western Digital drives (they also have a 750Gb HDD), and they are too thick for the PS3 from what I have read. I think your only option right now is a 500Gb 2.5" HDD.

here is the 750Gb drive, which is too thick to fit into the PS3:

Note: WD7500KEVT are 12.5 mm high and may not be compatible with all notebook systems. Consult system specifications for maximum allowable drive height before attempting to install.

... Quite a few laptops are 9.5mm in height, so this doesn't fit those kinds of laptops. The PS3 (Playstation 3) is also only 9.5mm in height, so this doesn't fit. Currently for the PS3 you can get on Newegg.com a 500GB found at Item# N82E16822136314, which was said to be the largest for a PS3, until the NEW 640GB from Western Digital at the 9.5mm height just got released to retailers. So get the 500GB I referred to above NOW or wait for the 640GB for PS3.
Edit: it looks like WD has a 640Gb 2.5" HDD which will fit:

I dont know where you can shop at in the netherlands...
See if you can find a Seagate 500Gb 7200 RPM drive like this:

Thanks for the info. REP+. I love Western Digital in 1TB but if they don't fit , too bad. Is 1TB even formattable in FAT32 ? Because I have a Western Digital external HDD and my
PC woulden't let me format it to FAT32 due to the size.

Oh , and there are loads of webshops over here. Absolutely loads. More webshops than people. Lol.

I'll see what I can find.

There are ways to mod the ps3 and make it into an esata config and make using an external 3.5 in drive possible. All you should need is a desktop esata converter bracket.

True. But both my PlayStation 3's still have full warranty and I don't want to waste that.

Any good ? Apparantly very good. Reviewd good several times. Plus the price is only about $75.00.

Edit : I almost forgot , nevermind the 1TB HDD's. These are way overpriced at about $150.00. Plus they might not fit either.

Yeah the WD Scorpio Blue is very good. it is 5400 but that shouldnt be too much of an issue. I have both a Scorpio Blue and a Scorpio Black (7200 RPM) in my 2 laptops.

The esata bracket in no way modifies any part on the ps3 as in you don't have to cut it or change anything on the ps3 itself. It would in no way void your warranty. Just an idea.

Second what exactly do you need the bigger hard drive for? I get by with a 20 gig by streaming my movies from my pc.

FYI a faster HDD (cache, RPM, whatever else) don't make the PS3 any faster. Installs will be the same speeds (like 1-2 seconds off a 7 min install with a 7200RPM).

I'll try to look for the video test I've seen about this. Basically they compared install and bootup times of select PS3 games (Resistance 2, MGS, KZ2, and maybe a few others, don't remember) against different hard drive specs and the results were the same.

Edit:
(not the vid I was looking for, can't seem to find it with a quick google. Also note this is an extreme example with a SDD. HDD's compared against one another will be even more close and a useless upgrade, as you can see in the link below)
