Question PS3 encryption weirdness??

so my buddies PS3 decided to see some bluray use today, and it tells him this

"to play BD you must renew encryption key. perform system software update to renew the encryption key"

i tried to connect the Ethernet cable to it but it wouldn't detect it so i couldn't get it online to check it for updates.

now i don't have a ps3 so i have no idea what to do here, so i ask you guys for help

ok now about this part........

Quote:
SIXAXIS™ wireless controller connected to the PlayStation 3 with a USB cable
You must have the SIXAXIS wireless controller connected to the PlayStation 3 system directly via a USB cable before you attempt to do a System Update. If you do not have a USB cable to connect the SIXAXIS wireless controller , do not attempt to do the System Update.
is that the remote that comes with it? i thought he only had wireless, if he dont have that is that a serious step?

just curious why it has to be plugged in with usb

it's probably because the bluetooth that the ps3 controller connects with goes through hardwired. either that or because the controller needs to be above a certain power level the whole time. just guesses

you charge/sync it to the system via a cable. As for the updates. you can find them on sonys homepage. But it would be easier to update via the PS3 on internets.
